The faculty, too, has helped considerably. Both Coach Dygert and Mrs. Francis had an active part in the fencers' program. Norton Goldberg has acted as publicity manager. Student-coach Ziegfield QZiggiej Troy, winner of the Illinois State Open Cham- pionship, instructed the fencers. Kenneth Garrett starred by being awarded first place in the Illinois High School divisiong Bob Sheridan placed third. Calumet got its first View of a fencing meet when students crowded the gym to see the tournament with Lindblom. F-?.-.....c,.w...v., pvc... -CCN ,, -, Pagf 97

The Calumet Kiwiettes The Calumet Kiwiettes, under the sponsorship of Mr. Arthur La Pointe, is one of Calumet's outstanding clubs. It is the only o-ne of its kind for high school girls in Chicago. The organization was at hrst known as The Girls Aviation Club,' but a decision on the part of the members resulted in the changing of the name to Kiwiettes, as was suggested by Mr. La Pointe. who pointed out that a Kiwiette,' was a ground pilot. Most of the members are 3A's a-nd 4B's, but a few are 4A's. At the conclusion of each business meeting, a lecture was given by Mr. La Pointe. The topics of the lectures were related to aviation and its progress in the United States. One of the especially interesting subjects was: The Lighted Airwaysfy Early in the second semester the girls voted on a design for an emblem to be worn on a sweater. The design chosen aroused much interest throughout the entire school. These emblems can be seen on the girls in the pictures. The oflicers were as follows: Kathryn Biehn, presidentg Josephine Ficaro, vice-presi- dentg Eleanor Congdon, secretaryg Margaret Stampf, treasurerg Ann Louise Potter, social secretaryg Lucille Greensley, publicity manager. Gola' Pin Honor Soeiefy The Calumet Honor Societies In addition to the National Honor Society there are three Calumet honor societies to encourage scholarship: the Gold Pin Honor Society, the Silver Pin Honor Society, and the Bronze Pin Honor Society. To be eligible for membership to the Gold Pin Honor Society, a student must have an E average with no more than one G in any semester, for at least six consecutive semesters. A student may feel quite proud of being a member of this group. The Silver Pin Honor Society requires its members to have the same average as for the Gold Pin Honor Society, but for only four consecutive semesters. The silver emblems awarded to the members are a great incentive. During the past semester the Gold and Silver Pin Societies decided to merge, and elected the following officers: Herbert Kalk, president, Phillip Freeman, vice-president, Marjorie Julius, secretary, and Margaret Kirbach, treasurer. The Bronze Pin Honor Society awards a bronze pin and membership in the society to students who have maintained an average of E throughout two semesters. This society was formed to encourage lower classmen. Silver Pin H0-nor Sociefy Back Rau-Hogan, NVagner, Eicliman, McDonough, Morrall, Fritze, Siegert, Lennon, XVeiherman. Frou!
