Against the strong Parker team our boys went down to defeat, but not because they didn't fight. Calumet took the lead at first, but Parker kept getting steadily stronger and pulled away at the end to win, 30 to 24. Fenger beat us, 27 to 16, because the boys went to pieces completely. Ben Swanson and Cart Cooley wound up their high school careers in this game. Both were reliable floor men as well as good shots. This was also the last game for Bill Rose. ' After graduation the team took on a new aspect with the addition of Cyn Mazeika in February. He put new life into the team. Calumet was defeated by Harper by the close score of 28 to 27. Kielty played exceptionally well in this game. A basket in the last thirty seconds won this game for Harper. Bowen, south section champs, defeated Calumet 40 to 31. The players picked their own positions in this game. Jack Nelson, playi-ng forward for his Hrst time, picked up three baskets and a free throw. Ma- zeika played his usual hard game. In our last league stand, against Morgan Park, the boys told Coach Boyle they would try to show him the real Calumet spirit, and they did, winning a hard game, 34 to 31. Buchholz, a sophomore, showed great promise X . 1 fa V v H fa ' ra DOHEETY in this game. ai SN, ya Q l KIIZLTY CAPTAIN we I ' 'Swanson E 1 N- is x s .Q Heavyweight Basketball The 1933 heavyweight team started off with two straight wins over Crane, one by the score of 21 to 10, the other Z6 to 25. In the latter game a free throw by MacFarlane in the closing seconds of the game was the deciding factor. In the next game, after leading Lindblom for two quarters, the team missed and the score was in Li-ndblom's favor, 21 to 17. In the University of Chicago Christmas Tournament the boys started out strong with a win over Lake View, 22 to 17. But after leading for three quarters against Hyde Park, the team lost in the last quarter, 14 to 10. Against our neighbors, St. Leo, the team lost 31 to 27 in a nip and tuck affair. Doherty, a junior, played a whale of a game, as did Cooley. Calumet was nosed out i-n the last quarter by three one-handed baskets. To start off the league season the team won over Hirsch, 25 to 20, in an exceptionally hard fought game. Some timely free throws by Schrick, as well as the ac- curate shooting of Cooley and Swanson, saved the day. In the next league game, against Hyde Park, the team lost, 27 to 22, largely because of inaccuracy in charity tosses. Roy Soderlind played a particularly good game. In a traveling game against Marmion High of Au- rora, the team showed brilliance, but lost 23 to 22. Marmion beat some of the strongest teams of the sea- son. Ben Swanson showed class in this game, with his Hghting spirit and good eye. ff. e 5' ...ggr F we , l I ll I lllt I n .O UND PIf7L50P1 JCHRIQK.- Page 120

Back Ron'-Wfeyer, Daluga, Kellett, Handley, Church, Reece, Kennelly, O'I.eary, Carlson, Mullin, Stube, Stephan. Front Row-Smart, Konrath, Borman, Schrik, Cook, Soderlind, Nelson, Seper, Holmquist, Buchholz, Bischenauer. Baseball With hardly two weeks to condition his team and with all but two regulars lost by graduation, Coach Paulson set about his difricult task of building a baseball team. Two Weeks practice resulted in the following lineup: Schrick and Mullins pitching, with Weyei' catching, Nelson at first, Konrath at the keystone position, Daluga alternating with Stephen at short, and Cleary handling the hot cornetf' The outheld consisted of Soderlind, left field, Holmquist, centerheld, and Buchholz right field. Without having scheduled any practice games, Cal opened her league season at Ham- ilton Park with the strong Parker nine. Despite the Spartans' efforts they were defeated to the tune of 6-2. In the second game Cal defeated Hirsch in a hard fought battle 4-3. Fenger came next and caught the Spartans off stride, defeating them 11-2. Despite the early nine-run lead piled up by Morgan Park, Cal recovered, only to be defeated in the latter part of the game, 12-9. In a practice tilt Cal easily defeated the Tilden squad with a smashing 11-4 win. Traveling to Culver, Cal handed the cadets a 9-5 trouncing, with Mullins hurling the Hrst half of the game and Schrick polishing them off. For the second time Cal met Morgan Park at the latter's Held but was defeated 4-2. O'Leary did the hurling. In one of the hardest fought games of the season Cal lost to Bowen 8-7, the game going into the eighth inning with Cal using three pitchers, Mullin, Schrick, and Mac- Farlane. In the next game Calumet met the Parker nine and was again defeated, 7-1. Schrick and Cook did the pitching. Hirsch won the next game, 12-6, and then Bowen defeated Calumet in a close light, 6-5. In the final game, on May 17, Calumet won from Fenget, 11-6. Since four of this year's team, Buchholz, Daluga, Schrick, and Weye1', will be back next year, the prospects are better for 1935. This yearls team deserves great commenda- tion for always putting up a good fight. Page 122
