ai SN, ya Q l KIIZLTY CAPTAIN we I ' 'Swanson E 1 N- is x s .Q Heavyweight Basketball The 1933 heavyweight team started off with two straight wins over Crane, one by the score of 21 to 10, the other Z6 to 25. In the latter game a free throw by MacFarlane in the closing seconds of the game was the deciding factor. In the next game, after leading Lindblom for two quarters, the team missed and the score was in Li-ndblom's favor, 21 to 17. In the University of Chicago Christmas Tournament the boys started out strong with a win over Lake View, 22 to 17. But after leading for three quarters against Hyde Park, the team lost in the last quarter, 14 to 10. Against our neighbors, St. Leo, the team lost 31 to 27 in a nip and tuck affair. Doherty, a junior, played a whale of a game, as did Cooley. Calumet was nosed out i-n the last quarter by three one-handed baskets. To start off the league season the team won over Hirsch, 25 to 20, in an exceptionally hard fought game. Some timely free throws by Schrick, as well as the ac- curate shooting of Cooley and Swanson, saved the day. In the next league game, against Hyde Park, the team lost, 27 to 22, largely because of inaccuracy in charity tosses. Roy Soderlind played a particularly good game. In a traveling game against Marmion High of Au- rora, the team showed brilliance, but lost 23 to 22. Marmion beat some of the strongest teams of the sea- son. Ben Swanson showed class in this game, with his Hghting spirit and good eye. ff. e 5' ...ggr F we , l I ll I lllt I n .O UND PIf7L50P1 JCHRIQK.- Page 120

Against the strong Parker team our boys went down to defeat, but not because they didn't fight. Calumet took the lead at first, but Parker kept getting steadily stronger and pulled away at the end to win, 30 to 24. Fenger beat us, 27 to 16, because the boys went to pieces completely. Ben Swanson and Cart Cooley wound up their high school careers in this game. Both were reliable floor men as well as good shots. This was also the last game for Bill Rose. ' After graduation the team took on a new aspect with the addition of Cyn Mazeika in February. He put new life into the team. Calumet was defeated by Harper by the close score of 28 to 27. Kielty played exceptionally well in this game. A basket in the last thirty seconds won this game for Harper. Bowen, south section champs, defeated Calumet 40 to 31.
