si The victorious Spartans once more were home to T' 1 face the rest of the schedule. Bowen came hoping to 1 upset the lights' string of five wins, but they too were ,' ' sent home in defeat, 25 to 23, although the end of the F i game saw Bowen almost on top. Bill Smith was the xxx, V, 1 deciding factor in the winning score. This game gave 5X i Calumet the south section title and qualified her for g 3 the quarter-finals. fi J The last game was a sad finish for the blazing record 7, if of six victories. Morgan Park was responsible for this If defeat, playing wonderful ball to be tied for second ' A place. Blake ran wild for Morgan Park and scored 21 if f 1 points. It seemed that the Calumet team was worn 1 out from their fast pace. The score was 44 to 25. ,J , Calumet now looked forward to the coming game l with Lindblom in the quarter-finals at White City. ' . The student body turned out en masse to cheer their Spartans on. The game started slowly and the end of l the first half saw Calumet behind by a few points. The tilt then progressed swiftly with Lindblom sweeping i out in front and remaining ahead until the game ended, x 27 to 18. Holmquist starred for Calumet with 9 points. xl 'iii This game finished a successful season for the light- 'i'g' g weight basketball team. V zu A Joe Goldberg, the lights' leading scorer, received i All-City' honors. Frank Holmquist also received rec- ognition and was awarded All-Section honors. 's victory was Joe Goldberg, whose stellar shooting made seventeen points. Everybody agreed that this was the best game turned in for Calumet by the lights. The team next traveled to Parker and once more was triumphant, this time by the score 25 to 21. The lights kept the lead all the way, and when toward the end of the game Parker threatened, Holmquist made a couple of charity-tosses. The fighting Spartans, now breaking into rnidseason form, traveled to Fenger next, and again showed their superiority, 30 to 23. Goldberg featured with nine free throws and Dick Adams, playing his last game for Calumet, starred with his offense and also played a beautiful defensive game. Adams ended a successful career of three years in which his steadiness was proven time and again. He played stellar ball as captain and was a good influence on the newer boys. He was the backbone of the team. The February graduation meant also the departure of Bob Moreland, Andrew Johnson, and Hayden Smith, all of whom had been prominent players. The lights, now thoroughly acquainted with victory, went to Harper for their last traveling game. Filling Adams, shoes was quite a problem but George Haas was given this responsibility. Haas was a member of 'last year's five but was not eligible till February. He pfdved to be the best scorer in the Harper game. xXVith him K starred XVorm Hayes, who leaped iritb,t'he limelight , with his splendid defense. , 1 , ' CASEY s A' ' Y J X . ai SN, ya Q l KIIZLTY CAPTAIN we I ' 'Swanson E 1 N- is x s .Q Heavyweight Basketball The 1933 heavyweight team started off with two straight wins over Crane, one by the score of 21 to 10, the other Z6 to 25. In the latter game a free throw by MacFarlane in the closing seconds of the game was the deciding factor. In the next game, after leading Lindblom for two quarters, the team missed and the score was in Li-ndblom's favor, 21 to 17. In the University of Chicago Christmas Tournament the boys started out strong with a win over Lake View, 22 to 17. But after leading for three quarters against Hyde Park, the team lost in the last quarter, 14 to 10. Against our neighbors, St. Leo, the team lost 31 to 27 in a nip and tuck affair. Doherty, a junior, played a whale of a game, as did Cooley. Calumet was nosed out i-n the last quarter by three one-handed baskets. To start off the league season the team won over Hirsch, 25 to 20, in an exceptionally hard fought game. Some timely free throws by Schrick, as well as the ac- curate shooting of Cooley and Swanson, saved the day. In the next league game, against Hyde Park, the team lost, 27 to 22, largely because of inaccuracy in charity tosses. Roy Soderlind played a particularly good game. In a traveling game against Marmion High of Au- rora, the team showed brilliance, but lost 23 to 22. Marmion beat some of the strongest teams of the sea- son. Ben Swanson showed class in this game, with his Hghting spirit and good eye. ff. e 5' ...ggr F we , l I ll I lllt I n .O UND PIf7L50P1 JCHRIQK.- Page 120
