MOOSE McCANN, Tackle Moose McCann is the man whom Coach Dygert described as an ideal tackle. McCann's great defensive skill enabled him to stop many plays that were headed for positive gains. Moose is a senior. BILL HUMPHREYS, End Bill Humphreys was noted for his unfailing good humor. He was aggressive and a diflicult ma-n to take out, a line pass receiver, and a dependable blocker. Bill is a senior and will be missed at Calumet next season. AL TEED, Tackle Al Unconscious Teed was not a flashy player but a steady, dependable tackle. He acquired his nickname in the Parker game when he was quite badly hurt. How- ever, he recovered in time for the final game. Al was a ferocious tackler, especially in the Morgan Park game. He will be greatly missed next year. ED MCDONALD, Guard Ed McDonald, selected as all-section guard, Was a fine defensive man despite his lack of weight. Mac made it extremely diifcult for opposing linemen to take him out. He is a junior and is expected to be a valuable man in Coach Dygert's machine next year. JIM PIPER, Hal fback Jim Piper, Calumet's versatile triple-threat man, 'se- lected as an all-city halfback, was the mainstay of the team's running attack. He could pass, kick, and run with equal effectiveness. He had great driving power and was a deadly tackler. Piper's services will be greatly missed next year. In this capacity he acted all season, and to quote Coach Dygert, he never made a technical error in any game. Although handicapped by lack of weight, he held the difficult position of full- back. FRANCIS BARTSCH, End Anyone who followed Cal's football season cannot forget a certain linesman who always found time to encourage his teammates. Bartsch was the spark plug of the team. Frank was at his best on defense, was a vicious tackler, and always played heads-up ball. His grim determination fitted him perfectly for the positio-n of line captain. TED RINGMAN, Cvnim' Ted Ringman, one of the two men back from last year's squad, came up to all that was expected of him. His keen sense of diagnosing plays and going to the right place at the right time, earned for him the position of roving center. LAURIE JOHNSON, Halfback Laurie Johnson, Cal's right halfback and Piper's running mate, was noted for his blocking ability, which made many of Piper's fine runs possible. He was also an effective runner and could be depended on for yardage when it was needed. WALLY GRITZER, Guarrz' Wally, one of the three men who returned from last year's squad, held the position of guard. He was a dependable blocker and played his position so well that he was picked on one of the all-sectionu teams. Wally was graduated in February and will be missed in Coach Dygert's machine next fall. Page 114
