Calumet's Advanced Orchestra Calumetis advanced orchestra now has sixty members, with Edith Lawrence as concert-master. There is some exceedingly iine talent in the group. The orchestra was most fortunate in securing Mr. Henry Sopkin. a well known musician, for its director last January. Suiiicient credit cannot be given to him for his remarkably good work. For the city orchestra contests in April and May the members worked on May Day Dance by Hadley, the number required of all orchestras in the B group, and The French Military March by Saint-Saens, their optional number. In this cityrwide con- test Calumet made such a good showing that they were eligible to play in the finals at Orchestra Hall, where they won second place in the city. The orchestra has received considerable publicity in music magazines. They also had moving pictures taken by the Board of Education. There is still an opening for many new members who are willing to work and have enough school spirit to spend time in regular rehearsals. Urn'.'l11ml1'c.ll:i'ut'.'z1

The Junior Orchestra The junior orchestra was originated this semester by Mr. Soplsin, who asked the music teachers to make a canyass of their classes for players of orchestral instruments. The response was good. for the junior orchestra numbers forty members. practically all freshmen. This almost equals the number who belonged to Galumet's only orchestra last year. Next semester there will be three orchestras, the advanced. intermediate. and junior. The present iunior orchestra will be next semester's intermediate orchestra. They have played for the sixth period lunch seyeral times and for Mr. Sommers, head of the orchestra department of the Board of Education. The more adyanced mem- bers of the junior orchestra have practiced with the adyanced orchestra a few times. They also practiced the contest numbers and played with the advanced orchestra in the contests which were held at Englewood High and Orchestra Hall. Four of the yiolinists in the junior orchestra practiced yiola and played this semester in the contest. In all the junior orchestra furnished the advanced orchestra with four first yiolins, eight seconds. and four yiolas. flllt'fl1lIl1ll'i'lf Tun M 1 WX , J !,mi ' in fi 'ny ' .bugs -X - M' N

Because of the time and effort which the students have so willingly contributed toward making a success of their several important undertakings. the Mixed Chorus deserves the whole-hearted support of the entire student body. Due to their successful work in the contest at Orchestra Hall, the operetta, Lass of Lime- rick Town, the commencement exercises of February and June, entertainments for the P. T. A. and assemblies, the organization has gained great popularity among the students. The success of this club is due in large measure to their director, Miss Blood, under whose leadership this group has achieved an enviable record. Om' Hiiurlrcd Ttt'rlz'v
