For three quarters, our line held the much-talked about colored team back. Up to the last minute of play, neither side had scored. Then as the whistle blew, Phillips blocked a Calumet punt from behind our goal, scoring a safety. This game was later forfeited to Calumet, due to the proved ineligibility of several Phillips players. The next game was played with our ancient rival, Parker. Each team fought till the whistle, but neither could score. Our only real failure was in the Morgan Park game, with the score I3 to 6 in favor of Empehi. The old reliables, Zuehlke and Milchrist, smashed through for the touchdowns. Potson repeated his regular spearing of passes in this game. With the end of hostilities in the south section, we found that the scoreless Parker contest was all that kept us from a tie for Hrst place with Morgan Park. We had rolled up eighteen points to our opponents' thirteen. Capt. Lee Cochonour called the plays this season, occasionally being relieved by Tom McNamara. Among the newcomers, Emmett Donavan, Jimmie Bird, and Dan Schock stand out. Emmett is a brother of the veteran Bob Donovan. Fred Hoebel was placed on the second team of the Tribune,s all-city eleven, while More- house gained a corresponding honor in the Daily News selection. Boujie, Bird, Zuehlke and Morehouse won places on the all-star south-section team. Things looked promising for the heavies and hopes were high until the strong Bowen five was encountered. The Boilermakers took us for a big loss. Parker caught us in a dejected mood as the result of the Bowen game. We fought hard however, and the Green and White sunk one more basket than we did. In the next game Morgan Park retaliated for their first loss and took the contest 24 to 21. About this time the team was weakened by the graduation of Gordy,' Reynolds. l'Gordy has been a mainstay of Calumet basketball teams for the last several years. His shooting is fast and phe- nomenal. The team was captained this year by Chuck Stermer, the well-kxiifwn Calumet dramatist. His work at the guard position equalled if not bettered his success on the stage. He was a player feared by all opposing forwards. Stermer is graduating this year as is Robert Heitschmidt, they lanky Spartan center. Some of the veterans left for next ycarls team will be Mathias and Lundgren. Vic Mathias has in the past two years made a fine record in basket-ball. He has quite an eye for the basket, and the boys have selected him as their leader for next year. Earl Truelich played with Stermer in the guard position. Lundgren displayed his wares in the forward position. fax W' 'T' --'----- ' f ' ..Mt-i,.i--L-...M .7 to --5453 - . Les Nance, with his fast game, was close behind with an average of Eve points in each league game. The team placed third in the section, winning three games and losing five. They lost to the league leaders by one point. The first league game was dropped to Morgan Park by an 18 to 23 count. A later game with this team came to a similar end. The team was considerably pepped upfn the next game and brought home the bacon. Fenger was the victim, losing with a'2i ,t 16 score. A severe defeat was suffered at the hands of the strong Bowen quintet. Tllginies fought hard, but the Boilermakers made three baskets for every one of Calumet's. The return engagement with Bowen was not quite as bad a defeat as the first. one. Parker was fortunate enough to get a split with the lights. The Green and White took the first game by the narrow margin of one point. The second one was a flashing victory for Calumet. ..--..--..---,-.- ...... --,,zg,5- --,N-,g,- ,----,-,- - M fy, . Interest was so great that some rooms had the gallery filled with spectators of the games. These Contests deserve our utmost attention as they often reveal good team material. In addition to that, they serve to make sports more democratic as everyone has a chance to participate. The championship was won this year by Room 207. 5. 5'--S G:::fmf:mr-e- If Sgf h--' -f-----W .v , ' ,I T',' L - I I 20 N TEMULAC Wrestling Team OACH DYGERT has put his strong spirit into the grapplers, and the boys have shown a wonderful fight. Credit is due Mr. Jack Gridley, brother of one of the lllalt men, for his interest and support of the team. On his own initiative, he came up to the school in his spare time and taught the boys some of the liner points of the sport. Besides this, he otliciated at the meets. The grapplers entered in an amateur meet at the University of Chicago and came off with a creditable showing. Schock and Tinsman tied for third place in their groups. Art Nelson won his first several falls at this gathering but was downed by a Danish-American Champ. Calumet was well repre- sented in the one-forty-five class, Sweet and Schock starring. ln the first Tilden meet, both of came out on top. Schock's career was cut short by an accident in the second Tilglen encounter. In the absence of any omcial schedule, George Pleming, the manager, could only say that contests were expected with Lane, Bowen, and several other schools. That the mat men deserve our support cannot be denied. Championship spirit and material are in the group. and the boys have been devoting no little time to developing themselves. fx-x 0 , og. of --- --- m------f ,zgssg - Q-.A-v ff- - A-.W r M- L I2I iw TEMULAC l - Track ALUMETITES are gradually becoming aware of the importance and advantages of a track team. This season is really only the second year of organized track and field at our school. Capable runners and jumpers have been discovered and developed. Rigid training under Mr. Dygert enabled our boys to roll up points against schools that have the advantage of years of experience. In meets with Lindblom and Bowen neither Senior or Junior groups were able to come out on top. The best results were the Seniors' I8 points against Bovvenis 26 count with Lindblom. Chuck Sweet tops the Seniors in point-making, with fourteen for two meets. Schock showed ability in the Lindblom contest by scoring eight points, but injuries received in a wrestling meet, have put him out of the running. Jack O'Brien has shown that he may be depended upon for points by marking up six of them in the Bowen contest. Nystrom took the lead in the Junior section with twenty points scored in two meets. Harry Gill ranks second in this group. The team had plans to enter the University of Chicago indoor track meet which was held late in March. An incompleted schedule showed that meets with University High, Lake View, Bowen and other schools were planned. At present an even break can be looked for. Coach Dygert plans to turn the boys over to Mr. Freida at the beginning of the outdoor season as his own time will be taken up by spring football training. It might be well to mention the fact here that Harry Freida is no mean track man himself. His efforts in this line h.ave put him up as a candidate for the American Olympic team. In swimming, one of these new sports, we bid fair to put ourselves on a championship basis. With Mr. Paulson as coach, about two score boys, inexperienced in swimming competition, made a showing that demands our attention. One victory was counted among several defeats, but each defeat was a hard-fought, close meet. The swimming team, like track, is divided into two groups: the older boys in the senior division, and the younger in the junior division. It was the seniors who accounted for our single victory. Bowen, an old school with several years of swimming experience was the victim. Other meets were with Harrison, Morgan Park, and Fenger. The outstanding star of the team was William fPee Weej Clark. Rarely docs this Calu- metite take second place, with anyone. Earlandson has also done exceedingly well in the Senior group. Marchetti and Simpson of the Juniors made a successful showing, considering lack of experience. Chet Powers is the back-stroke star of the team. Next year we can expect to see a new star in the tank. Lou Barbour just came to Calumet after making a reputation as a swimmer at Englewood. f.x - FEV - ..- K, . ,W i-Q, fx ........ xi, ff has 123 g L TEMULAC I Baseball Team F ROM all indications 1928 is going to be a banner year for the baseball team. Williani Milchrist is captain this year. It is well known that Bill can be relied upon to cover any position, but at present he is starring on the third sack. Enough veterans are out to make a full team of experienced players. The pitching staff is composed of Bob Heitschmidt, George Beilfuss and a fast new recruit, Arthur Kidd. Zuehlke, Carey, and Mathias are willing to accept the receiving end of the battery. Owen Curtin has practically cinched first base. Al Hall and Matt Thomatz are contesting for second, and Milchrist will cover third. Harold Gregory is out for short stop. Paul Biehl is also knocking around for a place in the infield. Wilson, Fulton, Koglin, Biel, Behn. Carlson and Resse are the brightest contenders for a place in the garden. One practice game was lost to Marshall. It was our first encounter however, and we retaliated by taking Waller with a I4 to 3 score. Coach Paulson has the boys doing their ut-most to shine for Calumet. Schock, Jr., and his boys have placed Calumet first among the Chicago High Schools in the building of airships. The success of the craft is due to the alumni who so whole-heartedly donated financial aid and their services at all times. Among those who contributed were Joseph Lynch, owner of the Lynch air- held. His instructions and advice were exceedingly necessary for the plane's perfection. He devoted his valuable time to showing the students how to turn the wheels. where the gasoline goes, and how to fix flat tires. Synonymous with the name of Lynch, is that of Goldberg, who is the inventor of the four-valve cups which he pre- sented so that the landing of the plane would be soft. Neither can we forget the unselfish service of Charles Sweet, Secretary of Trea- sury who gave to the plane builders the motor of the Ford which he used when a student of Calumet. The rest of the equip- ment was bought with the 350,000 left by the class of 1928M. Frank Vetter, pilot of the plane, will hop off the roof of the school on a trial Bight, Monday. SENATOR VISITS CITY Senator sota, and the Lucy Schneider, stopped off at the Dearborn' air-port, to-day en route for Washington, where they will meet Walter Anderson. the U. -S. Ambassador to Italy, who is a former classmate of the Nelsons. Included in the party were Burton Richardson, the senator's secretary, and Mr. Henry Belsham and his wife, the former Doris Canon. They will stop at Guy Bai1ey's Shoreland Hotel, where they will take tea with famous actresses, Margarette Sunblad, Florence Stoel, Anna Sikma, Elsie Wedoff, Jean Gordon, Margaret Gridley, and Dorothy Starbird the pianist. From there they shall visit the Richards theatre where Miss Dorothy Dunston will dance. The team's center Edith Nel- son, let out a grutf laugh when she heard this. The two tackles. Ruth Jahnke and Eva Bartoli, said that they would play with one hand tied behind their backs. Eva with her hundred pounds of muscle is enough to scare any house-husband into distraction. The two guards, Vivian Strom- berg and Elsie Carlson, grit their teeth and said that they would break every bone in the man's head that dared to stand against them. The ends, Eleanor Olson and Betty Stainsby, the noted bone-crushers of the team, said that any man that got hy them would have to go on a stretcher. The backiield consisted of Okla Loudon, Isabelle Johnson, Edith Fisher, and Vivian Johnson said it would be great sport to have a little fun after finishing their hard schedule of previous games. The opposing team is headed by the big He-Man, Richard Hamil- ton and things are progressing for the big game. Robert Steele Louis Shaffer, and Al Hall said that they would play provided they were sufficiently assured that they wouldn't be injured in any way, shape or form and their wives would let them neglect the house-work that long. Among the other players on the men's team are Cyril Leehy, Guy Nelson, Walter Anderson, in the line. Those in the backfield are: Burt Richardson, Henry Belsham, Guy Bailey, and Everett Strange- man. The pleasure that you used to bring Is gone. You have a run . Whenyou were new, your brilliance Would shame the brightest star, But now your beauty is transformed, Oh, what a sight. you are. . On murky dawns and mornings clear I've donned you. Thru the day You've suffered. Now your Work is done, And I must cast you far away. It grips my very soul to think How much you've gone thru here, How bravely you've resisted slush and mire, Ahltime out, for a tear. But no--I'll not cast you away, Your worth is not all gone. I'll sew the rip-and men shall say, Your sole goes marching on. . , .-rg - Fixuur TALES! 1928 The football coach, Mr. Dygert, has issued a bulletin which reads: Calumet Girls are requested to secure dates with athletes on all Friday evenings preceding football games. Mrs. Sanders, adviser of the Student Council, has ordered open barrels of confetti placed at the head of each stairway so that it may be scattered about the halls as the students pass to their classes. Seen recently in the Wrigley building, Miss Dutton, one of the senior teachers, has acknowledged that she was placing an order for spearmint gum to be distributed as gifts to the graduates. While there has been no official confirmation, a rumor exists that the Executive Council is considering a proposal that the Civics room be converted into a smoking room for the use of students during the lunch periods. As Mr. Frieda, the basketball coach, has discovered that opposing teams are much embarrased by large scores run up against them, he has commenced the practise of putting in substitutes to tone down the annoying numbers. In order to increase the track ability of the school, Miss Melody, the principal, will promote racing from one class to another. All pupils will be held until the tardy bellg then they will be released, and each winner will be given a free period. 2f'3s ,I , ls 1 5 2 TEMULAC H 1 1 1 1 I 1 I 1 1 1 1 H II I L 1 1 I I I 1 I I I ! ! ! 1 1 I i n1u.-np.-Ip-.gl .-lpin.-.ll1u1..1.,1 -znniuniq-.1nn..ln1ql1.nn1n.1 .- 1 1 ... 1 1 MOTHER is doing HER share So FATHER it is Your DUTY to do Yours C A L U M E T FATHERS' CLUB Meetings 3rd Thursday of the Month HAMILTON PARK FIELDHOUSE -..gf lg..- CALUMET PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION Thanks the faculty and students of the Calumet High School for the kind cooperation and gooa' fellowship shown them throughout the year. -..if Ek..- V- jifgflw - , , iv?
