Whatever the fashion, footwear at CHS was in a constant state of change. All you had to do to to observe this change was to glance down and see the variety of foot fashions parading down the hallways. g Pitter-patter 5 Picture This . . . Activities! Picture This . . . the Warrior war whoop chanted by CHS Homecoming fans . . . the horns blaring in a parade line . . . the fluttering of butterflies in the stomach moments before the curtain rises . . . the rustle of long gowns swaying to the beat of a Prom band . . . the measured steps of three wisemen as they solemnly proceed down the auditorium aisle at the Christmas Pageant . . . the melodic voices floating across the auditorium at the Christmas Concert ... the flickering of candles illuminating the shining faces of Honor Society inductees . . . the glitter of holiday tinsel reflecting the spirit of the Christmas turnabout . . . the ner- vous voices of students teaching during Education Week . . . the swishing of tassels on smiling grads as they accept their diplomas. Picture these memories which capture a year of activities at CHS. Activities Division 7 a: Running for Homecoming King, can- didates include seniors Nathan Padgett, Vonnie LeBorde, Billy McQuen and Wesley Wilson. b: Working on the final stages of the junior float are juniors Tony Pogue and Barbara Dillon. c: Developing and creating the sophomore float are Elizabeth Sanchez, Richie fames and Tracey Tigner. d: Homecoming candidates for queen in- clude seniors Regina Drudge, Angie Botts, Suzanna Appleton and Lori Lazowski. e: Senior Regina Drudge compliments new Homecoming queen senior Angie Botts. f: Warrior players make a touchdown against Lowell ' s Red Devils. 8 Homecomimg Being wacky on a wacky week A neat week of dressing up. Begin- ning on Monday September 29, and continuing through October 3. Calumet held their annual spirit week starting off on Monday with “Hat and Sunglasses”. Tuesday was annual “Offically Sports Day”. Wednesday was set with “Class Col- or Day”. Thursday students dressed like their favorite teacher and on Fri- day the school had their traditional schools “Red and White Day.” During the week Drama Depart- ment presented their annual Homecoming Review. The Review was held on October 3rd during the students first and second periods. The 86 Homecoming Review was acted out as Saturday Night Live Special. Their was also an entertain- ing visit to Mel’s Diner and a acted out critic review of Sylvester Stallone. e: Sophomores Dianne Bogdan and Daniel Stadt are participating on “Teachers Day”. f: Senior Billy McQuen dresses up on “Of- fically Sports Day”. Spirit Week 11 The Great Con Our story takes place in the Gaston’s Mansion where sophomore Dianne Bogdan as Geraldine Gaston and her hus- band Chris Scott senior disguised as Father Bently, are out to cheat the insurance company out of a million dollar policy. The maid Alice, senior Lyn Nedreau and the inspector, junior Brian Willis an insurance investigator, are also trying for the million. This was a real life soap opera with many funny situations including hiding in the couch, where they are found out by the real in- surance agent Ambrose, sophomore Dan Stadt. Mary Ellen, junior Sue Maginot. a: Geraldine ' s husband senior Chris Scott, in disquise tries to win over the heart of Alice, sophomore Lynette Nedreau to get the in- surance money. b: Geraldine, sophomore Dianne Bogdan and her husband Chris Scott senior, get caught by the insurance man sophomore Daniel Stadt when trying to operate the insurance scam. 12 Fall Play c: Father Bently, senior Chris Scott, hiding Mary Ellen junior, Suzanne Maginot was discovered by Lynette Nedreau, Alice the maid, Ambrose sophomore, Daniel Stadt and Dianne Bogdan sophomore, d: Father Bently senior Chris Scott is hiding the supposed- ly dead body of Alice the maid sophomore Lynette Nedreau. e: Chris Scott senior, Father Bently ex- plains to Alice, Lynette Nedreau sophomore that he has come to pay his last respects to Geraldine’s husband. Fall Play 13 a: Sophomore, Donnell Kluga and Theresa Mosley are presenting junior conselor Mr. Don Starkey a candle, b: Senior Sheri Gibson and Donna Mad- dox are learning on the computer, c: Mr. Joe Portman is receiving a plant from Sheri Gibson, senior, on “Teacher Appreciation Day”. 14 Education Week Appreciating those CHS teachers During National Education Week members of the Student Council recognized outstanding contributions by faculty and students. Held from November 17 to 21 the weeks activities began with “Outstanding Student Day” on Monday. Tuesday was “Recogna- tion of Student Leaders”. Wednesday, parents were invited to visit on “Awareness Day”. On Thursday, students took the places of faculty and staff for “Student Teacher Exchange Day”. All teachers were appreciated on Friday “Teachers Apprecia- tion Day”. Faculty members presented the teachers with a plant. d: Being a student teacher for Mr. Thomas Manning is senior, Donna Maddox, e: Daniel Stadt, junior is a student teacher for Mrs. Judith Hott on National Educa- tion Week. f: Mr. Charles Cole, biology teacher talks to a parent on “Awareness Day” during National Education Week. Education Week 15 Romance was in the air Romance was in the air as the people danced and had a good time at the annual “CHS” candle-light reflection dance. The dance was held on December 12, 1987 from 7:30 to 11:00. Music was provided by the L L Mobile Sound and scenery consisted of Christmas trees and candles. Ammore studios pro- vided the photographs of dancing couples. 16 Turnabout a: Daydreaming at the annual turnabout is Senior Keith Jones and Sophomore Collein Frazier. b: Slow dancing at the ’86’ Turnabout are Senior Kathy Millspaugh and Junior Thomas Borders. c: Enjoying the refreshments at the turnabout are Sophomores Louis Garcia and Collien Frazier. d: Junior Jody Hoskins and Darren Demps stroll to the mistletoe, e: Senior Stephen Goins and Sophomore Tracy Barricks are dancing at Calumet High school’s Annual Turnabout. f: Sophomores Dawn Delacruz and Eliza Ibarra dance up a storm at the turnabout. Turnabout 17 a. Performing in the Christmas Play the three kings are asked where their destina- tion is by a Roman Guard. b. The 1986-87 Calumet High School Band prepares for the 1986 Christmas Pageant. c. Joseph and Mary ask the innkeeper for a room to stay the night. 18 Christmas Concerts Christmas Pageants Held Capturing the spirit of the holidays, the Band, Chorus and Drama Departments enhanced the holiday spirit by presenting concerts. Chorus and Drama Depart- ments joined together to perform the Christmas story for students and the community in two separate performances on December 15th. As the story was depicted on stage, the Chorus sang carols representing each scene. The Chorus was directed by Mr. Robert Velasco and the Drama Department by Mr. Paul Borlick. CHS Band members enlivened the holidays spirits with a con- cert on December 12th. Under the direction of Mrs. Belinda Potoma, the group played a varie- ty of Christmas music. The band performs for the 1986 Christmas Concert. Christmas Concerts 19 Teacher Of The Year Mrs. Joyce Weakland, Home Economics and Family Living teacher, was chosen as 1987 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Weakland sponsors the Sophomore Class and the C-Teens. After receiving the award, Mrs. Weakland stated, “I was totally shocked but ex- tremely happy.” a: Mrs. Joyce Weakland was chosen as teacher of the year, b: The teacher of the year, Mrs. Weakland, prepares a meal, c: Mrs. Weakland patiently stirs the ingredients in the pan. 20 Teacher of The Year d: Mrs. Joyce Weakland smiles to herself as she checks the food. e: Mrs. Joyce Weakland reviews the lesson for the day. Outstanding Teacher 21 Paying Off For Those Studying Hours A candlelight ceremony and reception for honor society members was held for parents and family members. All the “Smarties” lined up for the annual honor society on April 15th. The ceremony was held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Honor Society 24 School Life School Life 25 Silly Gags Honoring The Seniors On May 6, the annual awards ceremony was held in the school cafeteria from 6 to 8 p.m. Seniors honored the serious and not-so-serious at the 1987 Senior Banquet. Seniors were rewarded with hilarious gag awards for the great year of 1987. a: Senior Donna Maddox enjoying herself at the 1987 Senior banquet while accep- ting her state scholarship, b: Accepting a state scholarship is Senior Susanna Appleton. c: After accepting their certificates at the Senior banquet the Seniors enjoy their last days of school. d: Enjoying themselves are the class of ’87 Seniors at the Senior banquet, e: Kathy Millspaugh, Senior, accepts a pla- que from Mrs. Dorothy Hepp for Health Occupations at the Senior Banquet. 26 Senior Banquet c: Angel Murray and Mike Sahm are crowned Queen and King, d: Ruben Guzman and Barbara Haynes receive their programs and wine glasses. e: Prom candidates await the final results. Prom 29 87 grads There were many smil- ing, happy faces and a few tearful eyes as the 1987 graduating class ac- cepted their diplomas at commencement ceremonies on May 31. A total of 189 seniors par- ticipated in the ceremonies held in the field-house. The Invoca- tion was given by Sheri Gibson and the Welcome by LaVaughn LaBorde. Other speeches included the Salutatory Address, Branko Prpa; Co- Valedictory Addresses, William McQuen and Donna Maddox; the Class History, Jennifer Jones, and Appreciation, Donna Maddox. Picture this . . . the barking of orders at the line of scrimmage by the quarterback ... an en- couraging voice yelling “ You can do it” . . . the slamming of a spiked ball across the volleyball net . . . the slapping of waves along the pool’s edge as swim- mers plunge into competition . . . the fast paced action across the tennis net . . . the total concen- tration focused on the rim at the free-throw line the grueling pace of a cross country meet . . . the tangle of arms and legs straining for a wrestling posi- tion . . . the swosh of the golf ball as it sails through the air — the snap of the tape as a runner crosses the finish line. Picture these moments filling a year’s worth of sports activities. Sports Division 33 34 Cross Country and Tennis Awards given The boys’ tennis team went 12-2 and had a con- ference record of 6-0. The singles players records were, Seniors Don Baron 15-1, Ro Emig 16-1 and Junior Rawn Emig 16-0. Cross Country and Tennis 35 Team Improves Under New Coach If you talk about in- dividual praises for the 1986 football team, Mike Keck is one of the many names that comes to mind. Mike made the All State Football Team, which has not been ac- complished since 1964 by Robert Brown. Calumet High School’s Varsity Football Team finished with an improved record of 3-5. The Junior Varsity finished with a 1-1-5 record. Freshmen finished the season 0-7. The team overall had an outstanding season,” states Most Valuable Player Wesley Wilson. Jenny Jones, senior, “dinks” the ball over the net. 38 Volleyball Junior Varsity Volleyball team members gave a “superb” perfor- mance during the 1986 school year, ac- cording to Coach Carmen Lis. The squad ended the season 14-5. Of the five losses, four of the matches pro- gressed to the third game. The JV competed in the champion- ship game, but lost to a very strong Lake Central team, 14-16 and 7-15. “The whole team effort made for a great season!” exclaimed Coach Lis. Grabbing a Lake Suburban Con- ference Championship tie, Girls Varsi- ty Volleyball Team finished 15-9 for the season. The squad members Michelle Widelski, junior, was placed on the All Conference second team, and Jenny Jones, senior, received an All Conference honorable mention. Volleyball 39 Drudge Wins MVP Award CHS Girls Swim Team finished the season with a final record of 0-8. Senior Regina Drudge was recognized as a se- cond time winner of the ‘‘Most Valuable Swimmer.” Fellow swimmers were cited at the annual fall sports banquet including Senior Chris Conti “Pride and Hustle.” Sophomore Bonnie Simmons was “Most Improved” and Freshman Jessie Ring as the “Outstanding Freshman.” Senior Regina Drudge served as captain for the 1987 team. a: Senior Chris Conti finishes the 500 yard freestyle event, e: Senior Regina Drudge com- petes in the 100 yard butterfly event. 40 Girls Swimming b: row 1: Belinda Colon, Jessie Ring, Karen Pendley, Karen McBride, Shannon Robinson, Tracey Tigner, Mark Allen, row 2: Coach Jody Tibbs, Regina Drudge, Linda Day, Stacy Taylor, Chris Conti, Bonnie Simmons, Coach Doug Stare wicz. c: Freshman Karen Pendley competes in the 200 yard freestyle event. d: Sophomore Linda Day swims in the 100 yard backstroke event. Girls Swimming 41 a: Sophomore Willie Green shoots for two in sectional action, b: Senior Mike Keck shoots a lay up. c: Senior Branko Prpa outleaps his oppo- nent for a shot. zz 42 Boys Basketball Mike Keck 2nd Team Coach Traicoff in- dicated that the team had a decent season. The team had the second most wins in the Lake Subur- ban Conference. Coach Traicoff stated that there were only three seniors this year, Mike Keck, Don Baron, and Branko Prpa. There will be nine retur- ing players from the squad for next year’s team, “We have the nucleus of a sound basketball team”. a: Coach Willie Cross, Rob Cantu, Kevin Jones, Willie Green, Rawn Emig, Antuan Wilbon, Mike Keck, Coach Traicoff. Boys Basketball 43 Girls Team Rebuilds The 1986-87 season was a rebuilding year for Coach Robyn Payne. The team was led by Senior Dena Peterson who lettered 3 years and Junior Michelle Widelski was also chosen all-conference. Girls Basketball 45 Smith named to second-team Coach Jim Wadkins said that the highlight of the season was beating Crown Point who was ranked in the top ten. There were no seniors on this year’s squad. Underclassmen did all of the scoring this season ending with a record of 12-3. MVP, sophomore Butch Carpenter, qualified for semi-state again this year and ended his personal record at 23-3-1. Varsity J.V. Wrestling 47 Starewicz 50th victory The Seahawks swim team won 9 out of 17 in dual meets. Senior Daryl Goode led the team in scoring this year, and also set three new pool records. Highlights of the season included Senior Ro Emig finishing second in Lake Suburban Con- ference Sectional Competition. Boys Baseball 51 Regans Record The heart and soul of this year’s track team was in the hurdles and high jump. Seniors Aaron Regans and Ralph Whitehead and Junior Willie Collins were the top scorers this year. Regans set several school and meet records this year. At the spring Sports Ban- quet this year, Regans and Whitehead were named Most Valuable Players and Collins was named Most Improved. a: Freshman Brian Gronkiewicz heaves the shot-put. b: Sophomore Moses Lofton runs the 100 meter relay, c: Sophomore Anthony Hilson throws the shot-put. d: Junior Willie Collins prepares for a meet. e: Sophomores Willie Green and Robert Mitchell exchange the baton during a relay race. 52 Girls State Qualifiers The girls track team was paced by Juniors Tish Harrison, Stacy Jackson, Michelle Widelski and Sophomore Shreemone Ander- son. Michelle Widelski (discus) and Shreemone Anderson (200 meter dash), both qualified for the state championships. They lost a few close ones, but pulled off a vic- tory over the ever-so- tough Hammond Clark Pioneers. Under the leadership of Coach Jerry Tauber seven of his varsi- ty girls will return and are looking forward to a better season. The J.V. girls ended the season with a 1-12 record. French and Spanish students participated in Indiana State University’s language contest. Spanish students placed first in the skit and Pinata tournament. General math, Algebra and Geometry were just a few of the outstanding mathematics classes at Calumet High School. Algebra II and Trigonometry were offered for the more advanced students. Two of our students participated in the State Calculator Contest. If it’s figuring out new elements, exploring the universe, or learning about the galaxy, Calumet offered you the chance of a lifetime. Calumet of- fered one of the best science programs in Nor- thwest Indiana. Mathematics and Science 63 Something For Everyone One way to increase your reading and com- puter knowledge at Calumet was working in our labs. Calumet offered a lab for everyone. The reading lab offered a book for everyone’s taste. Mrs. Linda Demo who is in charge of the class, says it has been a big success. The Computer lab sup- plied us with up-to-date computers and software. The French Club is planning a trip this summer to Italy and France. The trip will be fun, interesting, and educational. Teens Conduct Sales For The Benefit Of Others C-Teens conducted several projects to benefit others. The group prepared Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets to give aid to needy families. The group also distributed Halloween treat bags and Easter baskets to the Lake Ridge Headstart children. In order to finance the trip, they sold several groups of items and candy. Also concerned with the welfare of others S.A.D.D. made products to remind couples that at- tended the annual Tur- nabout, Prom and Graduation, not to “drink and drive”.
