Right?” “Hey, look at everything around us. Did you see the same things yesterday?” “Well, then there’s your proof. People, places and things change in this fast- paced society.” CHS visited the Southlake Mall in December, to dis- cover how the whole envi- ronment is changin’. Christmas decorations were on display, and Santa was already taking orders. Inflation was giving prices a push, and we were required to dig deeper into our pock- ets. Although the biggest attraction at the Mall was the 135 different stores, stu- dents stopped to enjoy the Christmas trimmings. Left: Look at that price!” says Tony Har- desty to Laura Garibay. Above Left: Junior Donna Frye assists Les- lie Voorhies with a purchase from a store at the Mall.” Changin’ ENJOYIN’ CHSers attempt the good life ! “Enjoyin’ life” is a motto that one should live by. No matter how hard we try, we all feel the need to improve our approach to fun. However, we soon realize that we can only do our best. After all, the fun is in our attempt. “Enjoyin’ ” school activi- ties can be fun and interest- ing. Beating the “old grind” helps to break the monotony of the schoolday routine. Daily and nightly activi- ties during the school year included Spirit Week, Homecoming, plays, turna- bout, concerts, banquets, Graduation and Prom. A smorgasbord of fun! The pursuit of fun is a serious business. “Enjoyin’ ” was an intricate part of CHS student life. Is it mearly scoring the most points, or is it by the way we play the game? Yes, you’re right. It is the way we play the game! In order to win, one must put all of his her efforts toward playing fairly, hon- estly and with active enthu- siasm. What really counts is sportsmanship. That is: 1. Playing by the rules. 2. Having faith in your team- m ates. 3. Controlling your temper. 4. Staying in good shape. ( 5. Having a “stout heart’’ in defeat. 6. Avoiding boastfulness in victory. 7. Retaining a sound soul, a clean mind and a healthy body. 8. Playing the game. Golf 63 BOOKIN Did you bring an extra pencil? Wow! I can’t believe what my eyes are seeing! Yes, in this day and age students are studying. Well, I guess we all know why. Perhaps, everyone is finally realizing the neces- sity of an education. How- ever, the only way to receive one is by cracking those text books. Gee, there are so many things we can learn. The wide variety of areas at CHS should create inter- est. Whether in mathemat- ics, English, history, science, art, practical arts, foreign languages or industrial arts, the choices are many. Academic Division Grammatically speaking??? Parley-vous francais? Hab- las tu espanol? Sprecken sie deutsche? Students at Calumet were offered three different foreign languages in order to find the answers to those ques- tions. Courses included Span- ish I and II; French I, II, and III; German I, II and III. Mr. Steven France, German instructor, was added to the department in the fall. English courses included three years of required classes. Electives in the department were offered in journalism, yearbook, newspaper, senior English and speech. Below: Setting her own pace, sophomore Sherry Masterson types a page for yearbook class. Groups geared to academ- ics, service and vocational areas sponsored various activities during the year. Student Council was espe- cially active with Homecom- ing, a hostage recognition day, and a week of observ- ance for education. Vocational groups sold a number of items to finance their trips to state and national contests. All in all, joinin’ was a painless, and often a pleas- ant process. Everyone’s giving it the “Ear to Ear Grin!” Do you all know why everyone is full of joy and laughter? Perhaps it’s the process of growing and maturing, day by day. It’s time to ponder about the future, and what life has in store for us. As we look back, CHS will be only a small part of our total life. However, the choices are many, and the time is short. Therefore, part your hair, and say “Cheese.” Keep smilin’! A reversal of the FDR New Deal approach, the new administration has stressed fiscal responsibility. Perhaps, we will see try- ing times, between now and 1986. However, in the long run, perhaps it will result in a “rosier” future. Possibly graduates may have some trouble finding employment. However, additional education may make the job market less hostile.
