STRYCKER We, the Seniors of Calumet High, would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Mr. Harold Strycker, for his encourgement and the interest he has taken in each and every member of the Senior Class of 58. Mr. Strycker came to Calumet September 1945, and previous to that he taught in Bristol, Indiana. He ascended to the position of principal after one year as assistant principal. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Manchester College here in Indiana and did graduate work for his Master of Arts degree at Indiana University. MAX W. HILE A new member of the administration this year is Mr. Max W. Hile, assistant principal and dean of boys. Mr. Hile attended the University of Notre Dame from 1941 to 1943. He served in the U.S. Army for 3 years, after which he re-entered the University of Notre Dame in 1946 and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree. His first year of teaching was at Winchester, Kentucky. He received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Kentucky in 1950. The next position he held was at Adamsville, Tennessee in one of their high schools. The next four years were spent as principal of that high school. Both students and teachers seem happy with the program. Six of our top juniors and seniors took achievement tests at Crown Point and hope to qualify for Bloomington. LILLIAN B. PHILLIP J. The Senior A” band have appeared in parades and a few members have played at basketball and football games. The A Cappella Choir has been very active, too. Subjects in the field of Social Studies are the records of man’s progress, or lack of it, throughout the ages. This record is in History, Geography, Government, Economics and Sociology. The experience, knowledge and philosophy that comes down to us from the past is an invaluable source of direction to us in the present day. It is taught not only for its utilitarian value but also for its merits as a logical system of thought and reasoning. Training in planning and making correct decisions from known existing facts are its fundamental characteristics. Mathematics is the tap root of all sciences. D nduntnial An.tb John Shinovich, Eldon Shultz 9 Commercial Joseph Yacko, Lillian Kelavos, John McCall The Commercial Department prepares the students to meet the varied aspects of the business world. It gives them the basic knowledges of today s business and prepares them to further their education in business or job offerings for high school graduates. Ant Students in the Art Department have training in drawing, painting, chalk drawing, sculpture, modeling in clay and various other craft media. Each spring Miss Johnson plans an Art Exhibit which is scheduled in conjunction with the Music Department Festival. Later, on Award Day, special mention is made of students who have done outstanding work in art. This year several students entered the H. Gordon and Sons ' advertising contest. Zimmerman Student Council The Student Council members are composed of students elected from each homeroom representing that room in a group authorized to discuss student problems. This year there are eight representatives from each class. The objectives of the Student Council are to create and maintain school spirit and good citizenship, to interest students in school activ- ities, and to stimulate a spirit of cooperation among the students and the faculty. The accomplishments brought a- bout by the council are as follows: the election of freshman officers in the fall, the election of other class officers in the spring, the assemblies, the rental of the juke box for student entertainment, and Career Day, which is held each spring to help stu- dents decide on a future career. The council has also sponsored students to attend two Student Congresses held at Gary Lew Wallace and at Purdue University. REPRESENTATIVES One of the largest and oldest organizations in our school is the Girl ' s Athletic Association. This year the club is celebrating its 13th anniversary. The G.A.A. holds many events during the year volleyball, basketball, soccer, base- ball and bowling parties. They also have a picnic, a semi-formal dance, and a banquet at the end of the year when all awards are presented. A trophy is awarded to the girl having the most points and the girl having the highest bowling average also receives a trophy.
