As you glance through the 56 Chieftain in years to come, we sincerely hope you will recapture those memories and relive them once again. •i HAROLD F. DeVAULT Township Trustee Under the present administration of Mr. DeVault the township ' s scholastic program has made many advances. Two completely new schools - -Long - fellow and an elementary school at 25th and Cline --have been erected, plus a thirteen addition to the high school. Besides this extensive build- ing program, all schools have been redecorated. Two principals have been added to the faculty and a gen- eral raise in salary has been given to all teachers. WAYNE E. SWIHART Principal We the Senior Class of 1956 wish to thank Mr. Swihart for the personal interest he has shown in our class. He has guided us faithfully through our last three years of high school. Horace Mann, the Father of American Education, believed that the highest service we can perform for others is to teach them to help themselves. In 1937 during a centennial celebration of his work The Future Teachers of America was organized. Magister is the Latin word for teacher. This club was organized in 1951 to enable students to be- come acquainted with teaching as a career. The good teacher re- quires physical vitality, mental vigor, moral discrimination, a wholesome personality, helpful- ness, knowledge, and leadership. Through a point system the Club helps to develop these qualities. OFFICERS: President, Irvin Carlton; Vice-President, Charles Kelly; Secretary -Treasurer, Barbara Lucas. STANDING: J. Gunther. Club members include second year students and any first year students who plan to take second year Spanish. Initiation ceremonies are held in early spring. The chief purpose of the club is to promote more interest in Spanish- speaking countries and also to promote a better under- standing of the lives, habits, and customs of the people in these countries. The Pan-Am Club also pub- lishes a newspaper quarterly for all Spanish class members in which information concerning Spanish- speaking countries, and the Pan-Am Club activities are printed. The Student Council is com- posed of students elected from each homeroom. They represent that room in a group authorized to discuss student problems. Instead of electing an entirely new council each year, each representative is elected for two years. As new homerooms join the school or present members of the council leave, a repre- senative is elected to take his place. In this way the council retains experienced members. It is the duty of the repre- sentative to present all student council proposals to his home- room and report any dis- cussion to the council. He should bring any homeroom problems to the attention of the council and it will determine whether they should be pre- sented to the principal. The ac- complish- ments brought about by the council were the electing of a Varsity King, the use of a juke box for sock hops, and the sponsor- ing of students to attend two Student Congresses held at Gary Lew Wallace and Purdue University. Various committees were formed to work on problems for the school. Some of the areas dealt with are the cafeteria, bus loading, ap- nronriate dress, elections, and dances. The Student Council is nec- essary because it is the only way student problems or recom- mendations can be presented to the school authorities with the understanding that the pro- blem is supported by a major- ity of the students. It is the hope of the mem- bers of the council to strengthen the council to the point where the students will be able to make a greater contribution toward the operating and functioning of our school, and where every student can be proud that he is a part of a working democracy. The Sunshine Society is mainly a charitable organization. Its object is to inspire higher ideals for high school girls, to spread good cheer, and to train girls for active citizenship. The Sunshine Society ' s main project is sponsoring the polio drive within the school. This year members collected a total of $628 from the Polio Queen contest, collections during basketball games, and polio cards. They contribute to the Riley Fund and prepare Christmas baskets which are sent to needy families in the community. To raise money for this fund and the baskets the girls make Christmas corsages which they sell. Membership in this Society is restricted to junior and senior girls. There is a formal initation at which time all new members are taken into the society. 70 OFFICERS OF SENIOR BIBLE CLUB: President, Bob Taylor; Vice-President, Ethel Stoops; Secretary and Treasurer, Diane Keith. Approximately 300 girls from freshmen to seniors belong to this organization. Besides being one of the largest clubs, it is the oldest one in the school. Only last year we celebrated our tenth anniversary. The G. A. A. holds many events during the year-swimming and bow- ling parties, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and baseball. We also have two picnics, a semi-formal dance, and a banquet at the end of the year when all awards are presented. These awards are given on the basis of a point system whereby the girl, who has participated the most, receives recognition. A trophy is given to the girl with the most points. Money raising projects sponsored by the G. A. A. are: the sale of de- cals, the handling of the cloakroom, and the corsage sale at Loyalty Day. With part of this money the G. A. A. sponsors the cheerleaders and the pep club. Each year a trophy is presented to the Outstanding Senior Boy Athlete of the Year. It was not all work, but quite a bit of play. We started our first year in high school just as green as any other freshman class. Our first duty was to elect our officers. When the voting was finished, the new officers chosen were: President, Gordon Akin; Vice-President, Bob Oracheff; Secretary, Skip Whitlow; and Treasurer, Shirley Neil. Our Freshman activities included a Hard Luck Dance held on Friday, March 13. The small gym was decorated with paper figures of black cats and horse- shoes. To add to the atmosphere, we had a wishing well on the stage and a ladder in front of the door. With campaign slogans ringing in our ears, we elected our sophomore officers who were: President, Gordon Akin; Vice-President, Barbara Payne; Secretary, Shirley Neil; and Treasurer, Glen Kirk. The sophomore activity was a sock hop on February 2. Thoughts of class rings and the Junior -Senior Prom foremost in our minds, we elected the junio-r class officers. They were: President, Joe Carlin, Vice- President, Doris Appleton; Secretary, Lanoma Black; Treasurer, Barbara Kravetz. On December 8, our class rings arrived from the Herff-Jones Company. Boy, were they swell! Our Prom was held in Hotel Gary on May 20. The theme of the formal dance was While We ' re Young. Highlighting the evening was the crowning of the Prom Queen and King --Doris Appleton and Joe Carlin. Then it was here--our Senior year. As seniors, Roger Creel was our Presi- dent; Emil Smider, Vice-President; Doris Appleton, Secretary; and Joe Car- lin, Treasurer. With our election out of the way, we held a Senior Christmas Dance on December 16. The couples danced around a giant Christmas tree, which stood in the center of the gym. As you can see it hasn ' t been a bit dull from our point of view. You can have just as much fun as we have had, if you ' ll only follow in our footsteps. So good luck and best wishes to all the underclassmen. Sincerely yours.
