Upon completion of his Recruit Training at Great Lakes Illinois, he was assigned to the commissioning detail of the USS IOWA CBB- 61J and served aboard her in both the European and Pacific Theaters for the duration of World War ll. In March 1946 Master Chief Scherman was assigned to Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas, followed by duty at Pearl Harbor from October 1948 to January 1952 aboard ARD 29, an Auxiliary Repair Dry Dock then outfitting submarines for duty during the Korean Conflict. Master Chief Scherman began his amphibious career in January 1952 when he received orders to the USS RANKIN CAKA 1039 in Alemeda, California. The RANKIN was commissioned in March 1952, received her amphibious training in San Diego and was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet in August 1952: departing San Diego in August 1952, transiting the Panama Canal and arriving in Norfolk, VA in September 1952. His advisory status gives him a chance to discuss typical shipboard problems which confront the command and ship's company at regular seminars. Drawing upon the knowledge gained at these seminars, he finds that he has been able to achieve a greater insight to both of these areas. During Master Chief Scherman's 40 years of continuous active duty, he has been awarded the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater with eight Stars, Philippine Liberation with two stars, Navy Good Conduct with ten stars, European African Middle Eastern Campaign, WWII Victory, Navy Occupation Service, National Defense and Navy Achievement Medals.
