Upon completion of his Recruit Training at Great Lakes Illinois, he was assigned to the commissioning detail of the USS IOWA CBB 615 and served aboard her in both the European and Pacific Theaters for the duration of World War ll. ln March 1946 Master Chief Scherman was assigned to Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas, followed by duty at Pearl Harbor from October 1948 to January 1952 aboard ARD 29 an Auxiliary Repair Dry Dock then outfitting submarines for duty during the Korean Conflict. Master Chief Scherman began his amphibious career in January 1952 when he received orders to the USS RANIQIN CAKA 1005 in Alemeda, California. The RANl4lN was commissioned in March 1952, received her amphibious training in San Diego and was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet in August 1952, departing San Diego in August 1952, transiting the Panama Canal and arriving in Norfolk, VA in September 1952. Having served seven years aboard the Rankin, he was transferred to Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois where he served as a Company Commander and classroom instructor from 1959 to 1968. From January 1964 to March 1966 he served aboard the USS TRAVERSE COUNTY CLST 11605 followed by a tour aboard the USS CHIKASKA CAO 545 performing duties as the Ship's Boatswain from April 1966 to May 1967. Receiving orders in June 1967 to proceed to Albany, Georgia to Commission Naval Air Station, Albany, Georgia and perform duties as Chief Master at Arms. This billet he held until June of 1969. He transferred to USS RUSHMORE CLSD 145 in July 1969 serving as Chief Master at Arms, Senior Enlisted Advisor and Deck Department Leading Chief Petty Officer until its decommissioning in September 1970 and was subsequently assigned to the USS FORT SNELLING CLSD 005, then undergoing overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, again serving as Chief Master at Arms, Senior Enlisted Advisor and Deck Department Leading Chief until February 1974. In March of 1974 he transferred to Material Analysis Center at Norfolk, VA where he served as Leading Chief of the PMS Component. Master Chief Scherman reported on board USS CALOOSAHATCHEE in April of 1976 where he serves as Master Chief Petty Officer of the Command, Leading Chief of Deck Department and Second Division Officer. His advisory status gives him a chance to discuss typical shipboard problems and how they are handled with his counter parts from other commands at regular seminars. Drawing upon knowledge gained at these seminars, he finds that he has achieved a greater insight into the problems which confront both the command and ship's company. During Master Chief Scherman's B9 years of continuous service, he has been awarded the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater with eight Stars, Philippine Liberation with two stars, Navy Good Conduct with 9 stars, European African Middle Eastern Campaign, WWII Victory, Navy Occupation Service, National Defense and Navy Achievement medals. Master Chief Scherman is married to the former Dorothy Marie Brown of Fort Worth, Texas and has two daughters and four sons, one of whom is presently a Chief Petty Officer serving onboard the USS JULIUS FURNER CFFG 65. He had his family reside in Virginia Beach, VA and expect to make Virginia Beach home upon Master Chief Scherman's retirement. bmihwa ' f. TJ-21.?5--5 V, -. A-,' .'
