During the past year the vocational agriculture class engaged in several group activ- ities. Last spring several fruit trees and grape arbors were pruned.The class also mixed over a ton of mineral and a concentrate for two tons of chick feedgalso two hundred vin- es and trees were planted as a wild life shelter. This fall the major activities wereg arguing the top1cNHorses vs. tractorsN,at one of the evening school meet1ngs,cooperat1ng with the Homemaklng class in presenting a program for the final evening school meeting, attended by 140 guests. The last major activity was to sponsor an FFA basketball tourn- ament ln which Calmar defeated Postville 26 to 20 in the final round. Last summer a two day trip was taken to White Bear Lake Mlnnesotag several spots of interest were observed along the way. This picture illustrates the type of farming used by some of the farms in this community. The class gained experience by laying out strips on one of the nearby farms and observed conservation on other farms in the community. As well as building the brooder house p1ctured,the class also constructed a self feeder, cabinets in the hot lunch kitchen, and a loading chute, besides repairing gas engines and farm machinery. They won 14 of 16 scheduled games, and 17 out of 22 during the entire season. The boye en- tered the Sectional Tournament at Waucoma, where they were defeated by Clermont in the first game. This year the Cahawks again came out as runner- ups in the Turkey Valley Conference. They were the only Conference team to defeat Lawler who won the Conference title. There were 22 boys out for practice and a travel- ing squad of ten players were chosen. Without the cooperation of the rest of the squad, the Cahawks would never have had such a successful season. Four players will be lost by graduation, they are Lyle Flaskerud, Ray Martin, Greg Schissel, and Glenn Hillesland. Pictured at the right is Mr. Iverson the Cahawk's coach. The two classes combined showed great cooperation in selling the candy and apples at all the basketball games.The resulting fund was used to take a trip to an All High School Girls' Vocational Homemaking Congress held at Ames on May 9, 1941. A general part in Home mar sometime The Adult course of study was followed throughout the year and all of the girls took Projects. Great plans are being made to begin a nursery school here in Cal- this summer. Evening School was a grand success and the same is expected for the coming year. Home furnishings was the subject studied this year. For the first time in many years the Farm Shop boys had the privelege of trying their hand in the technique of kitchen work. Now we know that they realize what a task it really is. The sewing and darning wasn't a nice Job according to the quotations of those that, in a sense, were the participaters. Because they had such a short time to take instructions in the art of housekeeping, the units were not taken up ln detail. ps- X At the time that the Homemaking I girls were trying to detect the secrets of proper cooking they served a six o'c1ock dinner for the pleasure and entertainment of the faculty and members of the school board.The table was decorated with a centerpiece in the middle. This seemed to be quite an occasion and the girls received exper1ence,as well as learning and keeping in mind some of the manners asso- ciated with serving. S
