The play was entitled HJaney's One-Track Mindn. Leading characters were Carol Jean Slmonson, Leo Luzum and Hal Taylor. This year one-act plays took the place of declamatory. On February twentieth stu- dents selected at large from the high school presented three one-act plays. Vila June Kiel and Evelyn Congdon were tied for first in the contest to determine the best actress and Francis Dolan was awarded the honor of being the best act or. Stage managers were Francis Huber, John Krysan, and Richard Fje1stul.Plans are under way for the Senior Class Play to be staged sometime in the near future. CQNINIIEIQCIIAIL This is the fifth year Calmar has had a Commercial department in its high school. The enrollment in commercial subjects is steadily increasing. This year there are over fifty students taking commercial subjects and these subjects are open only to Juniors and Seniors. The courses offered in Commercial subjects are: Typing I, Shorthand, Book- keeping, Commercial Law and Business Arithmetic. March twenty-ninth, Ruth Novak, Rosemary Frana and Edythe Fisher went to Oelwein as a novice typing team to compete in the District Commercial Contest which was held there. Sixteen towns entered the contest and Calmar came out in fourth place. Pictured to the right is a glimpse into the typing room. The typing room is equipped with eleven typewriters and since that is not enough machines to accomodate all people wishing to take first year typing, two sections of beginning typing are given. Typing I classes are open to Juniors and Sen- iors. The typing classes have helped out in many of the extra-curricular activities this year. They have prepared programs for the class plays and other public entertainments. They have also helped out with the typing of the school paper whenever their services were needed. Ch 'ti As almost every family has a family album, the senior class firmly believes all stu dents should have a yearbook too, and thus we have published one this year. In future years you will show your children, and perhaps your grand-children, yournCahawk' and see all the written and pictorial records of your classmates and scholastic events. They will no doubt be interested in the yearbook's unusual title 'Cahawk'. This name was derived from two sources, namely: 'Ca' from Calmar, and 'Hawk' from the Hawkeye state The staff consists of seniors elected by the class. They are aided by the remainder of the class and the teachers especially Miss Zeiger, who is taking charge of the C hawks production. Seated above are the two committees elected by the class to manage the edition of the 'Cahawk'. They consist of the Business Manager's Committee which includes: R. Martin, F Frlsble, E. Brom and L. Kovarlkgand the Ed1tor's Committee which includes: D. Flaskerud, C. Hosper, R. Blly, G. Schissel, G. Stenseth, and L. Stromsodt I IEIHHHNHD 'ITIHHE SCIENIES The students pictured below have made up the staff of the school paper, 'Behind the Scenes,' for this school year. The staff has endeavored to produce a bigger and better paper by adding special features and novel ideas in each additional publication for the enjoyment of their readers. We sincerely hope our school will always be able to have a school paper, as it is an important link between teacher and student, home and school The paper is put out by the efforts of not only the staff, but by students who have taken typing and have been trained to try to type the news without too many typographi cal errors. The editor wishes to thank all who have in any way contributed toward the paper by typing, writing class news, athletics, and other miscellaneous art1cles.As Fri day is the official day the paper comes off the school press, there 1sn't much studying done until all news items, especially the gossip, have been thoroughly read. One of the last papers of the year was edited by the Junior class to gain experience as they will be the producing factor next school term, and to relieve the burden of editing from the seniors. The 'Behind the Scenes' staff sincerely hopes everyone will always be as 1n- terested and willing to help in the future as they have been in the past to promote the paper. Standing: Kiel, R. They won 14 of 16 scheduled games, and 17 out of 22 during the entire season. The boye en- tered the Sectional Tournament at Waucoma, where they were defeated by Clermont in the first game. This year the Cahawks again came out as runner- ups in the Turkey Valley Conference. They were the only Conference team to defeat Lawler who won the Conference title. There were 22 boys out for practice and a travel- ing squad of ten players were chosen. Without the cooperation of the rest of the squad, the Cahawks would never have had such a successful season. Four players will be lost by graduation, they are Lyle Flaskerud, Ray Martin, Greg Schissel, and Glenn Hillesland. Pictured at the right is Mr. Iverson the Cahawk's coach. During the past year the vocational agriculture class engaged in several group activ- ities. Last spring several fruit trees and grape arbors were pruned. The class also mixed over a ton of mineral and a concentrate for two tons of chick feedgalso two hundred vin- es and trees were planted as a wild life shelter. This fall the major activities wereg arguing the top1cNHorses vs. tractorsN,at one of the evening school meet1ngs,cooperat1ng with the Homemaklng class in presenting a program for the final evening school meeting, attended by 140 guests. The last major activity was to sponsor an FFA basketball tourn- ament ln which Calmar defeated Postville 26 to 20 in the final round. Last summer a two day trip was taken to White Bear Lake Mlnnesotag several spots of interest were observed along the way. This picture illustrates the type of farming used by some of the farms in this community. The class gained experience by laying out strips on one of the nearby farms and observed conservation on other farms in the community. As well as building the brooder house p1ctured,the class also constructed a self feeder, cabinets in the hot lunch kitchen, and a loading chute, besides repairing gas engines and farm machinery. Concrete work will also be taken up. s- , . ' 4143:91 X-,. ,,a , . IHIQMIIEMAIKIING Top Row: G. Timp, L. Kafka, M.S. Severson, R. Fjelstul, C. Kuboushek, D.Orke, J. Huinker, L. Poshusta, A. Huber, C. Halverson, Marie Vondersitt, Naomi Houdek This year has been quite a busy year for the Home Economics girls. The two classes combined showed great cooperation in selling the candy and apples at all the basketball games. The resulting fund was used to take a trip to an All High School Girls' Vocational Homemaking Congress held at Ames on May 9, 1941. A general part in Home mar sometime The Adult course of study was followed throughout the year and all of the girls took Projects. Great plans are being made to begin a nursery school here in Cal- this summer. Evening School was a grand success and the same is expected for the coming year. Home furnishings was the subject studied this year. For the first time in many years the Farm Shop boys had the privelege of trying their hand in the technique of kitchen work. Now we know that they realize what a task it really is. The sewing and darning wasn't a nice Job according to the quotations of those that, in a sense, were the participaters. Because they had such a short time to take instructions in the art of housekeeping, the units were not taken up ln detail. ps- X At the time that the Homemaking I girls were trying to detect the secrets of proper cooking they served a six o'c1ock dinner for the pleasure and entertainment of the faculty and members of the school board. The table was decorated with a centerpiece in the middle. This seemed to be quite an occasion and the girls received exper1ence,as well as learning and keeping in mind some of the manners asso- ciated with serving.
