EMCM(SW)Craig E.Smith He enlisted in June 1961 and after graduating from Recruit Training and 1C “A” School in San Diego, he reported to the USS DIACHENKO (APD 123). Sixteen months later, he was transferred to the USS WHIT- FIELD COUNTY (LST 1169), homeported in Yokosuka, Ja- pan. He then served 12 months in Vietnam aboard the USS BENE- WAH (APB 35), attached to River Squadron Nine. He then reported for duty to recommission the USS MIDWAY (CV 41) in 1969. In 1972, he reported to the USS TICON- DEROGA (CVS 14), where he par- ticipated in the last recovery mis- sion for Skylab 13, and the de- commissioning of Ticonderoga in 1973. He advanced to Chief Petty Of- ficer in 1976 and received orders to the Pre-Corn unit for USS SAI- PAN (LHA 2) in 1977. On board Saipan he served as LCPO, and Di- vision officer for 53 months. He was advanced to Senior Chief Pet- ty Officer. He was ordered to the USS CORAL SEA (CV43) in 1981. On Coral Sea, he was the “E” Di- vision LCPO and subsequently the Plat Lens and Electrical Branch Officer, in Air Department, V-2 Di- vision. In 1983, he transferred to In- structor Duty at SERVICE SCHOOL COMMAND, San Diego where he was advanced to Master Chief Pet- ty Officer in 1985. In February 1987, he reported to USS VALLEY FORGE (CG 49) as the 3M Coor- dinator until December 1988, when he became the Command Master Chief. He served on Valley Forge until October 1990 when he transferred to the USS CALLAGH- AN (DDG 994) as the Command Master Chief. He is married to the former An- tonia I. Grahor of Dubrovnik, Yu- goslavia. They have one son, An- dreas, and reside in Paradise Hills, in San Diego. COMMAND MASTER CHIEF 14
