 COMMANDING OFFICER Commander David M. Ryan was born in Wilmington, Delaware. He attend public schools in Arlington, VA and is a 1974 graduate from Shippensburg State University in Shippensburg, Pennsyl- vania, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Adminis- tration. Following Commissioning in 1975 through Officer Candidate School, Commander Ryan served at sea for the next eight years. His initial assignment was aboard USS CLAUDE V. RICKETTS (DDG 5) as Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Commander, Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Two. His follow on sea duty was aboard USS LAWRENCE (DDG 4) in Norfolk, Virginia as Gunnery Officer and ASW Officer. Subsequent Department Head sea tours included Weapons Officer aboard USS AYLWIN (FF 1081) followed by Chief Engineer Officer aboard USS SPARTANBURG COUNTY (LST 1192). Upon completion of his Department Head tours he was assigned to Naval Military Personnel Command (NMPC-4) as Surface Officer Detailer and fleeted up to the Surface Sea Co- ordinator. From July 1985 to July 1987, he served as Naval Aide to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, DC. Commander Ryan served as Executive Officer, USS HARRY W. HILL (DD 986) homeported in San Diego from November 1987 to August 1989. Prior to his assignment as Commanding Officer, USS CALLAGHAN (DDG 994), he served as Deputy Director, Re- stricted Line Staff Corps Officer Distribution and Special Place- ment Division (NMPC-44), Washington, DC. Commander Ryan is a proven subspeciaiist in Personnel Man- agement. He has made major deployments to the Middle East, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and Western Pacific and has been a member of the Pacific Fleet ASW Squadron. He has been awarded two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy Com- mendation Medals, three Navy Achievement Medals, and various Campaign and Service Medals. Commander Ryan is Married to the former Bette Lorraine Lof- stead of Morgantown, West Virginia. They reside in Coronado, California and have one son, Bryan Matthew. 9
