Commanding Officer (Plcinkowner) CDR John T. Hood Commander Hood graduated from the University of Kansas in 1962 with a degree of Rochelor of Science in Chemical engineering. He attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1963, and was commissioned an Cnsign on 22 November 1963. His first assignment was in USS MUllttNV (DD S28) where he served as Communications Officer. In 1966, Commander Hood was assigned to duty as Officer-in-Chargc of a Swift boat in Viet Nam where he served for one year. Ordered to duty under instruction in the Ordnance engineering curriculum at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, Commander Hood graduated in 1969 with Master of Science in electrical engineering and electrical engineer degrees. He then reported, via Naval Destroyer School, to USS JOHN KING (DOG-3) where he served two years as Uleapons Officer. In November 1972, Commander Hood was ordered to duty in the Surface Missile Systems Project Office at the Naval Ordnance Systems Command where he served as DIG RAW Modernization Project Officer. UUith the formation of the Naval Sea Systems Command in July 1976, Commander Hood was assigned to duty as executive Assistant to the Deputy Commander for LUeapons, Systems and engineering. He then attended the Command and Staff course at the Naval UJar College, Newport, Rhode Island, followed by assignment to USS JOHN McCniN (DOG-36) as executive Officer where he served until February 1978. Returning to Washington, Commander Hood most recently served on the staff of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Surface Warfare) as RCGIS Program Coordinator. Commander Hood has been awarded the legion of Merit, the Rronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal. Commander Hood is married to the former Janice Skinner of Dawson, Iowa. They have two children, Jennifer and Matthew. 4

USS CRlMGHflN (DDG-994) v.lk «61 «aw See« USS CAllAGHAN (DOG 994) is the second KIDD Closs Guided Missile Destroyer designed and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Homeported in San Diego, Californio, CAllAGHAN uuill be assigned to Cruiser Destroyer Group FIV€ and Destroyer Squadron NINC. The KIDD Class DDG originally designed for the Iranian Navy is unique among U.S. worships, adding the Combat Systems capabilities of a nuclear powered VIRGINIA Closs Cruiser to the inherent Antisubmarine Warfare qualities of a SPAUANCC Class Destroyer. CAllAGHAN and other ships of the class are driven by four General Clectric IM-2500 gas turbines turning twin controllable-reversible pitch propellers. Designed originally for use on large aircraft these engines hove been modified for marine use and produce approximately 20,000 horsepower each. These engines ore capable of moving ships at speeds in excess of 30 knots and provide a degree of maneuverability and flexibility unequaled by any other warship of similar size. CAllAGHAN s design is modular in nature, allowing for easy installation of entire subsystems within the ship. Space and weight reservations have been made to accommodate further weapons systems and electronic systems as they are developed. Crew comfort and habitability were also of prime consideration in CAllAGHAN's design. Oerthing areas are spacious compared to earlier destroyers and cruisers and the ship is equipped with features uncommon to the average warship. Automation of many of the ship's weapons and engineering systems permits CAllAGHAN lo be manned by far fewer personnel than otherwise might be necessary. As a highly versatile multi-mission Guided Missile Destroyer, CAllAGHAN is capable of operating independently or in company with amphibious or carrier task forces. CfllinGHHN uses the most advanced AAW and ASLLI equipment in the fleet to accomplish any task demanded of her. The ship is equipped with such sophisticated weapon systems as the Tartar D missile system and the AN SOS-53 digital sonar. In addition to its sonar, CAllAGHAN's ASW suite includes ASAOC, two triple barreled torpedo tubes and provisions for carrying ASUJ helicopters. CAllAGHAN also boasts two 5 inch 54 caliber fully automatic gun mounts controlled by the digital MK86 Fire Control System. Harpoon anti-ship missiles and the Phalanx Close in UJeapon System. CAllAGHAN is a destroyerman's dream. She incorporates the best technology available in both her exceptional propulsion system and the fully integrated combat system forming a combination that makes her a ship unequalcd by any other in the world. 3
