The Department of Public Instruction and the Governor of the Commonwealth have charged me specifically with a sacred trust. I am keenly sensible of the quality of that trust, and distinctly under- stand that the highest confidence is implied when a great Commonwealth places upon the president the mantle of responsibility for the intellectual, physical, social and cultural development of hundreds of its young men and women. I have been encouraged by the promise that this trust is shared gener- ously with an intellectually eminent faculty, who are completely devoted to the enhancement of education, and by an alert student body who are earnest in purpose and above all highly appreciative of the privileged op- portunities accorded them by the citizens of the Commonwealth. Confident that the trustees, faculty, students, alumni, and the citizens of the Commonwealth will support every sound purpose and program of this institution, I am proud to serve you with a spirit of generous considera- tion, and dedication to the cause of teacher education. I am certain that we will fulfill our missions as good teachers and bring credit to the profes- sion, and honor and dignity to the California State Teachers College. The coordina- tion of the many steps in publishing the annual makes the production an enterprise which is a challenge to every member of the staff. W Industrial Arts Leader Vulcan The lndustrial Arts Leader is a newspaper published twice a year by the students of the industrial arts department. Staff members per- form all the functions of newspaper work in the composition of the material and also the actual press work , under the competent supervision of Mr. Anthony Stavaski and Dr. S. L. Coover. The publication is circulated to students, faculty, alumni, and heads in the field of industrial edu- cation, in an attempt to keep them informed concerning the activities of the department and latest developments in industrial education. . K Q - Known as the Freshman Bible, the Vulcan is the handbook of the college, and is published once a year for distribution at registration time in September to all matriculating students. This book provides, for both faculty and students, practical information concerning customs and regulations of the college, campus activities and organizations, and student government. It offers a concrete source of information concerning life on the California campus. The faculty sponsor is Mr. George Harding. Student Congress Student Cabinet Student Congress is the legislative branch of the Student Activities Association. To encour- age and regulate school activities, to stimulate a spirit of unity within the student body, and to vitalize the principles of democratic government are the objectives of this group. The principal function of Congress is to allocate funds from the Student Activities Fund to the various recog- nized organizations of campus. The Student Congress is composed of representatives from each class, representatives from each recognized extra-curricular organization onthe campus, and the president of the Student Activities Associa- tion. The sponsors are Clyde Hartman and Frank Lenox. Student Cabinet was affected to act as a clearing board for Congress, because much of the work of Student Congress is of detailed na- ture. Twelve members of Congress who have served one year are elected to Cabinet. It has no real powers of its own, but submits its recom- mendations concerning policy and actions to Stu- dent Congress for final authorization. Guided by the philosophy of student participation, the group works with the administration and enioys complete freedom in requesting information and making suggestions on matters that are bene- ficial to the college in general. The sponsor is Frank Lenox. l STUDENT CABINET Front Row, left to right: Edith Kilroy, Phyliss Bodnar, Rita Willis, Secretary, Raenna Biddle. Several players were lost via graduation, ineligibility, and withdrawal, but there were replacements available. Then the un- thought of stepped in, a plague of iniuries. Player after player was getting seriously hurt. Morale became low and the team of eleven couldn't iell as one unit. They suttered their first loss to a strong Denison ball club by an 18 to 6 score. Indiana then edged out a 6 to 0 victory over the low-feeling Vulcans. The Fire Gods received their third defeat at the hands of Lock Haven by a 14 to 0 ledger. Shippensburg was then visited by our gridiron representatives, still no luck. Shippensburg 34, California 12. ln the next ball game hopes ran a little higher as the Red and White fought a hard battle with West Chester's Rams. The Novak Picks Up Yardage closing minutes proved disastrous. West Chester 26, CSTC 7. Clarion then threw a stumbling block in the way of California's up-hill climb, a 21 to O defeat. The Vulcans, on annual Dad's Day, were inspired by their fathers in a 31 to 6 trouncing of a highly 'favored Bloomsburg eleven. Capability was proven again as the Red and White handed a loss to the West Virginia STC champs. California 20, West Liberty 13. ln the final game ofthe season a fighting Edinboro ball club rallied to overcome the Vulcans to gain a 19 to 6 vic- tory. Recipients of laurels for the year were George Scott and John Masneri, who were elected honorary co-captains at the close of the season. Ron Novak re- ceived the most recognition as the outstanding back on the squad, which was all due to his never ending hard fighting and clean play. George Scott, who was selected as the best lineman on the CSTS team, re- ceived the honor of being the only player from this college to be named to the All-State Teachers Confer- ence All-Star Team. We hope that Lady Luck won't play havoc with the Vulcans next season so they can improve on their record of 2 wins and 7 losses. by George Kupets Little Dinardo Takes on a Man Size Job fi V l ,X t g Ti.. Hotz Tries For Anotlter Two-Pointer Despite a poor won-lost record, the California Vulcans, coached by Gene Hester, provided many thrills for their followers. Due mainly to inexperience and lack of depth, the Hestermen man- aged only three victories for the season. However, there is more behind these bare facts than meets the eye. In the home opener against Indiana, the Vul- cans put up a terrific battle before bow- ing on a last-second shot, 84-82. In cop- ping their first win, California soared over the century mark by defeating Edin- boro handily, 110-73. This game was also notable in that Sibby LoNigro, :xen- ior captain from Ellsworth, came within one point of tying Jim Kennedy's rec- ord for most points scored in a game. Shaw Scores Two Farrell to Hotz Sibby's record-breaking 19 field goals, combined with three free throws totaled up to 41 points. A few weeks later in a game against Slippery Rock, another record fell by the wayside. It was in this game that Roger Hotz, upon making 17 of 21 foul shots, broke the record for most free throws in a game, also held by Kennedy. Hotz and LoNigro were the big guns in the scoring department. Another notable feature of the '56-'57 season was the fine playmaking of Denny Kuremsky, sophomore, who suffered a leg iniury in one of the final games of the year. Ken Roger, fresh- man from Johnstown, edged into the limelight during the final phase of the season and became one of the Vulcan's most reliable scorers. Kenny was one of the big surprises of the year, showing great driving abil- ity and a fine iump shot. All in all, the season cannot be iudged as only a losing onep for with the experience gained by the five returning lettermen-Hotz, Rager, Kuremsky, Bob Bortner, and Jim Farrell-next year's outlook should be a brighter one. By virtue of winning 2 out of 3 section matches, the Vulcans surged ahead of their competition and claimed the State Teach- ers Conference Tennis Toga for 1956. Two mem- bers of the team, Joan Kray, senior from Mones- sen, and Denny Kuremsky, freshman from McKeesport, turned in superb efforts for the net- ters. Joan won five out of seven matches edging outsome SHOHQIUQE compeHHon and Denny clicked with seven consecutive victories, leav- ing his record unblemished forthe season. Bell, Book ancl Candle Faculty Sponsor, Louise Davis ancl Student Director Karl Wendelin. 148 ALFRED TROTH We would also like to honor a new addition to our staff, Ned De Forrest. Ned is entirely re- sponsible forthe i957 cover design of the Mono- cal. The staff was very pleased with his de- sign and we hope that the students and faculty members will share our pleasure. The special honors would not be complete unless we give recognition to Dennis Kuremsky and George Ku- pets for providing last minute assistance in the athletic write-ups. Finally, we would like to thank the students and faculty members who have made this '57 publication possible. Thanks . It is not a customary policy of the MONOCAL staff to confer any special honors upon particu- lar individuals, but in this edition the staff unani- mously agreed that we must give special men- tion to our photographer, AL TROTH. Not only did he take most of the organization and college life photos, but he is wholly responsible for the composite pictures, the campus photos, and the division pages. Unless a person is familiar with photography, he cannot begin to realize the effort which must be exerted in order to produce good results. We appreciate the work which Al has done for this book and we most heartily commend the efficiency with which he met all stated deadlines. This to us was vital. Because this book would have been impossible without his excellent contributions, we wish to thank him for a iob more than well done. NED DE FORREST FRESHMEN Abate, Alfred A., Muse ...,,. ...,.... .
