President's Message Four years ago the 1956 Senior Class and the present ad- ministration came as strangers to the campus of the State Teach- ers College maintained by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at California for the education of teachers. Since then the mem- bers of the class have witnessed and participated in a period of expansion and growth in which college officials, faculty, students, and employees have worked together as friends devoted to the common cause of creating a better institution to remember as we go our separate ways at graduation time. The college enrollment has doubled in the four-year period. The buildings and grounds have been renovated, repaired, re- furnished, and adapted to meet the needs of an increasing stu- dent body. The faculty has been expanded in number and enriched by a wider range of contributing colleges and univer- sities and by higher standards of qualification. The student body has been admitted on an elevated selective basis. This metamorphosis has resulted from a single objective to prepare the best possible-teachers for service in Pennsylvania schools. More teachers are needed annually to supply the de- mands made by school districts to provide instruction for steadily increased enrollments. But the need is not merely for more teachers, it is for better teaching too. May the future years hold pleasant memories of the hard work, relaxing activities, personal associations, and the exacting experiences of learning to be a teacher, an artist who moulds the shape of the World to be.
