NINETEEN NIN . NINETEEN NINE NINETEEN NINETE ALINE ANN} CAPITAL NINETEEN NINE TEEN NINETEEN NINETEEN NINETEEN _— a p a P , ———_ sw C The Fortieth Anniversary of CSUS Capital Collegian CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SACRAMENTO California State University, Sacramento is California’s Capital Campus CSUS, one of the major members of the nation’s largest system of senior public higher education, is celebrating it’s fortieth year of providing quality education. What sets the University apart from other collegiate institutions is it’s unique location in California’s capital city. Let’s look at the impact of this setting. The budget of the State of California, when compared to the nations of the world, ranks among the top five. Much of this budget is administered in downtown Sacramento, five miles west of the CSUS campus. The ensuing governmental process enhances the CSUS educational experience in a number of ways, from the internship, part-time employment and career opportunities available to students to the many part-time faculty members who bring with them the relevancy of their concurrent professional employment in the governmental process. Some colleges have an invisible ‘ivy covered’’ wall around them which isolates them from their community. For them, the community does not play an important part in their life of the college or their students. Not so in Sacramento! CSUS is a college without walls! The University has a love affair with it’s Community. With an annual budget of over “It’s an ideal location for a vital University.” $120 million, the University provides employment opportunities for more than 2,500 faculty and staff and shares it’s expertise in countless other ways to improve the quality of life in the community. The Greater Sacramento area, with approximately 1.3 million residents, is the fastest growing metropolitan community of its size in the nation. The reasons for this growth, healthy employment rates, economic development and the high quality of life, enhance “‘out of class experiences’, so important to student personal and professional development. CSUS facilities offer A Beautiful Campus Setting The CSUS campus, located alongside the historic American River on the eastern edge of Sacramento, is as vital now as it was more than 100 years ago when the site served as the western trailhead for the Pony Express. Originally housed on the campus of the then Sacramento Junior College, the University moved to it’s present site of nearly 300 acres in 1955. The tree-studded campus, with over 25 buildings, has an enrollment of more than 23,000 students. Projected enrollment increases have prompted a flurry of planned facility developments in the next few years. These developments include a new engineering building, a five-story classroom building, a major library addition, a new children’s center and a second story addition to the bookstore. Also planned is a major addition to the residence halls, which currently house more than 1,000 single students in facilities which are among the most attractive in California public higher education. An important adjunct to the campus is the Aquatics Center, located on Lake Natomas, ten miles east of the campus. The center provides water sports safety classroom instruction and recreational activities and has served as the host since 1985 of the prestigious Pacific Coast Rowing Championships. CSUS’s central location in the community and freeway proximity make it one of the most accessible of the 19 CSU campuses to both private and public transportation. Most sites in the Greater Sacramento area can be reached in less than one-half hour from the campus doorstep. Furthermore, the Sierra- Tahoe recreational areas and the many historic, cultural and recreational sites of San Francisco are only a two-hour drive from the campus. Student Life “Something for everyone — and more!’’, truly reflects the variety of activities available to CSUS students both on campus and in the community. | The Associated S tudents, Inc. (ASI) provides the framework for many campus-based activities. ASI operates on a budget of nearly $1 million dollars a year. Activities and services sponsored by ASI range from recreational outings to a bike shop, Child Care Center, community garden and the Aquatics Center. The University Union is the CSUS’s Capital Collegian looks at a winning combination of center of campus activity. The Union provides food service options, from a snack to a full Course meal, recreational activities and a place to relax or study between classes. A continuous variety of free entertainment is conducted in the Union including: concerts, films, performing arts, speakers, dances, etc. And more! Add over 150 student organizations including: cultural, departmental professional, service, recreational, fraternities and sororities, honorary, religious and special interest groups. Residence hall students have their own activity program, complimented by lighted tennis and basketball courts, swimming pool and sauna. lf that’s not enough, students can walk ‘“‘across the bridge’’ to the several coffeehouses along University Avenue, take in a Sacramento Kings game at Arco Arena, visit the Railroad Museum, History Center and Crocker Art Gallery in downtown Sacramento or participate in the night life in ‘‘Old Sacramento.” oe, ee i ee ee, Be = on Oe a ee =! In the near future, all athletics will be Division 1 (except football). The facilities are some of the best in the area. CSUS offers scholarships to men in Basketball, Baseball, and Football and to women in Basketball, Softball, and Volleyball. and festivities.” b] YW) © + — 140) Or O) S ® oO — O Y) © hae oO ep) 40) 2D ® = 42) ©) ney {@; oO le am The University Boasts A rich and diverse blend of students CSUS’s student enrollment has it’s roots in nearly every segment of the community, and is more reflective of those segments than many other colleges. The University setting provides students from all backgrounds with a rare opportunity to interact with each other intellectually, culturally and socially in a learning environment. Almost 100 nations are represented in the University’s international student enrollment. Likewise a number of CSUS students enroll at cooperating overseas universities during their upper division and graduate years, while receiving credit toward degree objectives. The University is making a renewed attempt to attract and retain students from certain ethnic minority and other backgrounds which are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. This “educational equity’’ effort involves not only those offices traditionally involved, including Student Affirmative Action, Educational Opportunity a ; ” Program and the Minority Engineering Program, but the entire campus community. CSUS draws students from all age groups. While the average student age remains in the mid-20’s, over ninety percent of the some 1500 new freshmen each year are nineteen years of age or younger. The growing number of over “‘thirty’’ and over “sixty”? students enrolling at CSUS has increased. Reentry students are served through the PASAR program. There’s a lot going on at CSUS CSUS offers many varied Academic challenges and opportunities The strength of the University’s instructional program is the committment of it’s faculty to undergraduate education. Full professors teach at all class levels. They bring with them ‘“‘just the right’ blend of theoretical training and professional experience. CSUS’s academic programs appear to be ‘just what the doctor ordered” based on their popularity. Those programs, which would expect to profit from the location of the University in the State Capital, have gained a well deserved reputation for their strength. The University’s “‘big but not too big’ reputation is well illustrated in the classroom. Actually, class size is less than what one would expect in a university the size of CSUS. Less than 15% of the classes enroll more than 30 students while less than 2% enroll more than 50 students. CSUS students are hardly lost in a vast educational machine as they are at some collegiate institutions. —_- i CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SACRAMENTO 6000 J ST.
