The World Around Us By 1974 the United States was making moves to adjust to a milieu of seeming crises. The Alaskan pipeline was approved, Kissinger’s nego- tiations in the Middle East finally resulted in an accord, while the Republican Administration was increasingly under fire in the Watergate investigations. The World Around Us In 1975 the United States began its adjust- ment to a world where events seemed to out- run our capacity to absorb them. While Rocke- feller began investigations into the misdeeds of the CIA and Ford announced the U.S. was in a recession, the Bicentennial celebrations officially began. In April, Vietnam again entered the news as the re- , maining U.S. personnel had to be evacuated from » Saigon. Meanwhile, New York City was in the midst of financial crisis. The danger of aerosol sprays to the atmosphere, an assassination at- tempt on Ford, the UN declaration of : Zionism as a form of racism, and the dictatorial emergency in India vy were other newsworthy events.
