Due lo a lack ol lacililies, only iuniors and seniors were allowed lo enroll during lhe lirsl semes- lers on lhe iunior college campus. The lirsl academic year opened wilh six lull lime lacully members, a slall ol lhree, and less lhan l00 lull lime sludenls. The sludenl body included one lone senior, John Collins, who mel all requiremenls lor gradualion and was commenced wilh all due ceremony al lhe end ol lhe lirsl year ol SSC's exislence. Allhough lile on lhe iunior collegecampus was novel, wilh classes held in aparlmenls and lacully ollices sandwiched in lcilchens, SSC sludenls lell like house guesls who were overslayinglheir welcome and longed lor a home ol lheir own. They walched building progress wilh eager impalience on lhe aller- nalely dusl clouded and mud lhiclcened sile ol lheir lulure home on lhe banlcs ol lhe American River. Al lasl lhe big day came, and sludenls, rallying around lhe slogan Go Easl wilh Wesl, lormed a moving day car parade lo lheir new home. Classes were held lor lhe lirsl lime on lhe presenl campus in February, l953, in Douglass l-lall, lhree science buildings and a row ol lemporaries. Since lhal lime, lhe pounding ol hammers has become almosl a lradilion al SSC, lor each year has marked lhe conslruclion ol anolher building on campus. ln lhe lall ol l956 sludenls saw lhe complelion ol a slu- denl aclivilies building and lhe beginnings ol a huge new classroom slruclure occupy- ing, lo lhe mixed emolions ol sludenls, lhe lormer 500 car Douglass l-lall parlcing lol. Already len years ahead ol eslimaled enroll- menl, lhe college expecls over 5000 sludenls nexl lall. ln ils len years ol growlh, SSC has erecled many educalional mileslones. A series ol arl lours lo lhe Bay Area in I954 inilialed a lield lour program which now includes arl, drama, economics, social science, lile sci- ence and hislory. Numerous arl exhibils, drama produclions, concerls and olher mu- sical programs presenled lor public enioy- menl indicale SSC's growlh as a cullural, as well as educalional, cenler . . . a vilal, liv- ing parl ol lhe communily.
