Originally, commencement meant the inception of the student graduate as a teacher and his recognition as such by his master and other members of the profession. In the ancient University of Paris, degrees were conferred in an unofficial initiation ceremony that was far from being solemn and dignified. But within 100 years of the first voluntary and half-playful ceremony, the degree became a necessary preliminary to the ecclesiastical license to teach. Today, the ceremonies of graduation are honored, highly respected rites that mark the culmination of four years of personal advancement through education. Graduation marks the beginning of a student's life in his community. Wearing of regalia, one of the oldest and most democratic of collegiate customs, carries with it more than the tradition of centuries. The plain black robe is a symbol of achievement for the graduating student and a significant reminder that he is in no way different from his fellow man. lr J pr J I ri 9 , '5P'?ff' 1 'MA Iii 'N I I an-'iifg' 7 u M Eli 9 '5 .5 457 V E . , f. 3 .
