Our college is steadily gaining stature as an institution of which we all can be proud. We all arelooking forward to the day when Sacramento State will be viewed as having the best of athletic teams, the largest of social activities and the finest educational program to be found anywhere. A Utopia of this sort cannot merely be thought about. If we want it, it has to be worked for. I think that all of us have carried ourselves in this manner this past year. l would like to thank you all indi- vidually for the splendid cooperation and support you have given me. STATE PRESIDENT CF C.S.T.A Barbara Hansen, a junior at Sacramento State College, is the president of the California Student Teacher Association for 1955- 56. California Student Teacher Association is the oldest organiza- tion of its kind in the United States and is in its nineteenth year in California. Miss Hansen, studying elementary education here at Sacra- mento State, hopes to become an elementary teacher. Miss Hansen has done considerable traveling in line with her duties, going to Los Angeles, to Chico, and north to Humlaolt Coun- ty. She attended the National TEPS Conference in Chicago last summer, held in connection with the National Education Associa- tion convention. This year, with the untiring efforts of faculty, students and alumni, SSC entered into conference play in football, basketball, track, baseball, tennis, golf and boxing. Equally beneficial was the successful organiza- tion of intramural sports which included activities for individuals or groups, men or women, and faculty or students. ELECTIONS . . . had a mighty big iob this year. it was up to Betty to govern the policies ot all student body, class and special elections as well as to check the qualifications of candidates for otiice before granting petitions to circulate to individuals or their sponsors. You probably saw Betty and some of her helpers busy during the Freshmen Class Election in the tall, the Homecoming or Casaba Queen Contest, or the Class and Student Body Election this spring. FINE ARTS . . . was also kept busy this year-in fact, it became necessary to appoint an assistant to help ease the load. Both Bob and Jim worked hard to stimulate the students of SSC in drama, art and music. Drama offered two maior productions this year, each time seeking student participation. Visual art activities at SSC also provided opportunities in the field of fine and commercial art. Numerous exhibitions of student work were highlighted by the yearly exhibit presented to the general public. A fine music pro- gram which included the Little Symphony, Concert Band and Chorus added to the importance of music here at SSC. Christmas programs and Spring Concerts by the Band and Chorus and faculty recitals at the Crocker Art Gallery added sparkle to the full fine arts program. 26 l PUBLICATIONS . . . main duty is to govern all publications and communications of the student body. Doris was also responsible for encouraging student PUBLICITY . . . interest in the various publications on ciation publishes a weekly newspaper, the STATESMAN, a handbook, and literary magazine, the SCRIBE, is also campus. The Student Asso- the HORNET, a yearbook, the Student Directory. A published. coordinates with Dr. Christie all publications and communications of interest to the students. Beverly releases all news and announce- ments to the Hornet, maintains all bulletin boards. lt is her job to gather all data important to the student body and release same to appropriate newsgoing organizations. Her main iob is to act as a coordinator between news agencies and the State College. She succeeded Knute Martin who held this position last semester. RALLY COMMITTEE . . . is under the supervision of the Executive Council, with its main objective being to develop college spirit among the students and faculty, and to promote the welfare of the college and the Student Association. You've probably seen Don and the rest of the Rally Committee at SSC's football and basketball games, assemblies, rallies or around the campus, helping wherever, and whenever they can. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. . . is responsible for the organization and supervision of all social events sponsored by ASSC. Sue, along with her crew of helpers, has really worked hard to successfully continue some of SSC's traditions that happen once a year-such as the New Students Tea in the fall and spring, the Junior Prom in December, election and crowning of Q Casaba Queen in February. In the month of May the Jamboree, all college-student faculty picnic, and the Student Loan Fund Drive were held. There've also been get-acquainted dances, fun nights and after game dances. WORLD AFFAIRS . . . is responsible for the promotion and supervision of any campus- wide or international activity. lt was up to Shirley to organize the Model United Nations Delegation, and to act as a temporary chariman until a permanent person had been elected by the dele- gation which represented Italy. It was also Shirley's iob to organ- ize the World University Service Drive which is desianed to aid students in foreign countries. , Doris Caldwell Publications jx, . 'ff' gf . They acted as guides and hosts to campus visitors, and worked hard to carry on a continuing pro- gram to initiate and preserve traditions for Sacramento State. Homecoming, with its Bonfire Rally parade of floats, alumni wel- coming and football game was organized by the Rally Committee. Rally Committee also worked hard to make the new students feel at home their first couple of weeks on the campus. Then there was the selection and crowning of Deanna Peters as our i956 Casaba Queen, along with some other memorable events that were planned and carried out by the Rally Committee. This year, Bruce Becker led the Greens Committee while Carolyn Robinson had charge of the Golds. Both groups worked hand-in-hand with each other, trying to promote the organization's main objective . . . to develop college spirit among the students and the faculty, and to promote the welfare of the college and the Student Association. A note of appreciation should also be given to Rally Committee's two sponsors: Dr. Willard Smith and lvlr. Norman I-lunt. Both gave much of their time and effort for student activities. Coach Dave Strong was faced with the problem of building a team around a very few returning lettermen. The first day of practice saw two new faces on the coaching staff, in addition to Hal Wolf, helping Strong were Hank Eles- puru and .lim Vitti. The Hornets started strong, winning their first two games against Southern Oregon and Treasure Island Navy. The confidence and will to win was never to be denied the Hornets as they let each opponent know they were in a real ball game. Halfback Eddie Soto earned a first team spot on the All conference team. Tackle Dave Hotell was named to the second eleven. ? i u4f '?. -vvsk .L sy' ,lOilT14l'rtD't,L3 ,QE ,M if 'Qs XWQ Z f mf 2.
