DR. GUY WEST President PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The ultimate purpose for which our college exists is basic to every aspect of our academic way of life. We study that we may know more about ideas and things and prepare ourselves for deeper insights tomorrow. We think in order to weigh values and thus determine a sound course of action for our- selves as individuals and as a society of free men. We play for relaxation and enjoyment and to “recreate’’ our minds and bodies for the tasks that lie ahead. We have our group activities in order to satisfy a need for human association and to learn to live together in an increasingly complex society. Thus, everything we do here serves a two-fold purpose. Life must be lived today as well as tomorrow. But the extent to which our thoughts and actions today are in harmony with our needs of tomorrow determines in large measure the degree of happiness and success which we can hope to enjoy in the future. All this, I think, can be said in simpler terms: It is important to be serious and constructive in our thought and action. What we say and do and think today becomes important for us, and for the world, tomorrow. College, there- fore, is no place for irresponsible individuals. It is a source of the deepest satisfaction to me to observe distinct evidences of a maturing process in most our students. This, I believe, reflects favorably upon our efforts to establish high standards in every phase of our campus activities and to provide for our students an educational porgram which not only exposes them to the broadest range of facts and principles chosen from the rich store of human culture, but which also encourages and enables them to make maximum application of such knowledge in thier day-to-day experiences on and off the campus. | |
