For we are the ‘home’ college, so to speak, and because of our location in the capital city, our standards and goals must be set particularly high. The scope of our activities, both academic and social, already reflect on many persons as an example for other colleges to follow. Our development in the classroom, as each semester progresses, and our preparation for future work help us gain thoughtful minds and maturity. But we also gain in knowledge of leadership and friendship through student government, clubs, athletics, fine arts, general activities and publications. All of these make up our memories of college life and Sacramento State, and here, as a partial | record of these things, is the 1954 Statesman. y y f wrt al al oh whl ast wat BE ai i TABLE OF CONTENTS Fe il] tn een ns pete eels 5 alan ae haat a oe meres 13 Student Government 22...c...-:22.c.-0sccc 0s22-cccaeesecontene 29 (2 Tf RI satan me A) ee a Se mY 37 PRGHIY NAGS cee ecee eee Ot rie ene eee nto emcees 53 PE Jie (olny £21 Col reese Mere eerie ere eee meet 79 Sy ogo) eee tek aed et pao Crier eee Pe ee 91 ! FACULTY GOVERNOR GOODWIN J. KNIGHT GooowiN J. KNIGHT GOVERNOR State of California GOVERNOR'S OFFICE SACRAMENTO March 30, 1954 I am pleased to have this opportunity to extend greetings to the faculty and students of Sacramento State College. You have a fine new campus and physical pient which provide the most modern facilities for gher education. Furthermore, its very location provides you with basic traditions which are so important to the spirit of any college. The American River is an important link between our State's historic past and the present. It has had a tremendous effect upon the early and rapid development of California. Your campus is located in a splendid progressive city--the Capital of our aes State--with a rich and vigorous heritage; with a ight and promisi: future. Such a setting for your academic work must be truly inspiring. To meet the challenge and to realize the promise this modern age offers, we must strive con- stantly for new knowledge and new techniques, Our State has no more important function than to provide the finest possible educational facilities for its young people. All Californians should have the oppor- A tunity to acquire the education which will help them t attain their proper place in our complex society. College training is no longer a luxury for a privi- leged few. It is rapidly becoming a necessity for a useful and well-adjusted life. The future of California rests in the hands of her young men and women. I hope the knowledge and training you are receiving at Sacramento State College will make your life finer, fuller and more productive as you prepare to assume the responsibilities of constructive citizenship in this great Republic of ena s Z KH . Governor PRESIDENT GUY WEST Our president, Dr. West, received his degrees from New Mexico Western College, University of Colorado and the University of California. He has also attend- ed Columbia, Arizona and Texas Universities. During his many years in the field of education he has served as high school teacher, principal, and has held several key positions with New Mexico Western College and Chico State College. He is a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Phi Delta Kappa and the State Committee on College Accreditation. He is past president of the Rotary Club and the Northern California Educational Research Association. Dr. West was made president of Sacramento State College upon its founding in 1947. eS ] F.
