T. Benning. Printing - Sacramento Lithograph Co. Binder - Silvius and Schoenbacher. Cover Design - Peggy Saunders. The yearbook staff thanks Dr. Mary Foley for suggesting the title for this book, “THE STATESMAN”. For I DIPT INTO THE FUTURE, FAR AS HUMAN EYE COULD SEE. SAW THE VISION OF THE WORLD, AND ALL THE WONDER THAT WOULD BE. 1 Locksley Hall Alfred, Lord Tennyson Aerial view of the future site of Sacramento State College on the American River. ALL GREAT THINGS HAVE SMALL BEGINNINGS. — PLATO. Statement of Dr. West. soils . ee Dr. Guy G. West, President of S. S. C. In the second year of its existence, this new college has grown to the point where it is difficult, if not impossible, fer one to know personally the hundreds of individuals — faculty and students — who compose it. And yet, the progress made by the institution has been the result of a very fine spirit of close cooperation and a common determination among both the faculty and the student body to fashion the kind of college all of us desire. We can make of Sacramento State College what we will; its fate is largely in our hands. If we have broad vision and worthy motives, and if we genuinely dedicate our minds, our hearts, and our hands to the achievement of our goals, we shall succeed in our effort to develop a superior college. But the task of building an institution is a never-ending one. It is like education which is a life-long process for every individual. A dynamic society deserves and requires dynamic institutions continuously dedicated to the task of adjusting themselves to ever changing needs. Thus, our work will never be complete. We have made only the beginnings. When we shall have finished the construction of our buildings, we shall only have begun to build the real “institution”. But this should not be any reason for discouragement; rather should it be considered a most stimulating challenge to participation in a creative and vitalizing experience. Lin Yutang has said: “The pursuit of knowledge is, after all, only like the exploration of a new continent, . . . and it will remain a pleasure . . . if the spirit of exploration with an open, questioning, curious and adventurous mind is maintained.” It is a source of great satisfaction to the faculty and administration that, from the very beginning of the new college, students have exhibited unusual interest, originality, and ability ir making adjustments to the many difficulties that have arisen. Nuturally, we expected a high level of classroom performance from a student body composed of a relatively large number of mature individuals, many of whom saw much of the world and its activities during the war years. It was also reasonable to expect good, solid classroom achievement with the learning process directed by excellently prepared and experienced teachers. But the students have not been content to stop here. They have laid the foundations of an effective student association and have developed a wel-rounded program of activities so essential to the development of good espirt de corps and campus morale. The publication of this yearbook is but one of many significant evidences of a live student spirit and an ability to succeed in the face of great difficulty. In order to achieve our ultimate purposes, it will be necessary to have adequate physical as well as human resources. The developemnt of our plant and physical equipment is a most pressing need. The selection of a site for the new campus makes possible the immediate development of a master plan in which all building units will be properly placed. Following that will come the drawing of plans for individual units, after which construction contracts can be let. This will require much time and effort, as well as adequate funds. But basic to the entire project is a vivid picture of the type of educational program we envision. Both the students and faculty have influenced, and will continue to influence, the philosophy and planning which give this this picture form and which will transform it into a living reality. In this cooperative undertaking, | have confidence that we shall continue to enjoy the full loyalty and support of the student body. And just as certain am | that in the years to come the results of all these efforts will be a source of much gratification to the present student body and to the multitude of students who will follow in these pioneering footsteps. The American Chemical Society was founded by chemists seventy- two years ago to provide a means by which their human, professional and scientific needs could be satisfied. Today, the American Chemical Society is the world’s largest organ- ization devoted to a single science. It provides opportunities for the making of ‘professional contacts, for exchange of scientific information, and for the presentation of original work before those specialists who can best appreciate its value. It maintains employment aids, promotes professional recognition, and assists in bettering the economic status of its members. In addition, the American Chemical Society has made it possible for the undergraduate students of chemistry to learn the value of professional association through student affiliation, and prepares the students for a more constructive life in chemistry. The purpose of this chapter is to afford an opportunity for the students of chemistry and chemical engineering in the Sacramento State College to become better acquainted, to secure the intellectual stimulation that arises from professional association, to secure experience in preparing and presenting technical material before audiences, to foster a professional spirit among the members and to instill a professional pride in chemistry. The Sacramento Physical Education and Recreation Society is made up of Physical Education Majors and Minors in the State College. This organization was founded so that social and athletic activities could be held for all interested in Physical Educatio n. Social gatherings and sport nights hold the highlights in the year’s events. Meetings are held every second Thursday of the month at which time a business meeting is held and afterward followed by volleyball, badminton, bowling, swimming or dancing. The semester was started off with a bang with all members meeting at the home of Miss Charlotte Bergstrom for dinner. Election of officers took place at this time. Officers elected for the year were: President, John Patterson; Secretary-Treasurer, Janet Saunders; Program Director, Dorothy Carmel. Outgoing officers were: President, Sam Lyons; Secretary-Treasurer, Willie Jean Hughes; Program Director, Janet Bryant. The S.P.E.A.R.S. have helped usher, sell cokes, put up posters, hand out programs, and even push and pull the bleachers in and out before and after Hornet basketball games. Several club members are also on the basketball and baseball teams and all are active in other campus activities. Absent from picture: Harry Stuart. Sacramento State, in its first athletic endeavor, came up with a pretty fair basketball team this year. Although their record is not impressive from a win and loss standpoint, the club was a hustling, hard-fighting outfit and could easily have had a good season if a few breaks had come their way. All in all, for the first year of competition, the past season may be classified as a success. Most of the credit, for what showing the team made, belongs to Coach Warren Conrad. Conrad worked long and hard with the team and with individual players. This work paid off as seen by the parformances of Dick Gwinn, Chick Chase, Ed Perry and Parker Johnston, during the season. Ed Perry and Parker Johnston in the front line, Dick Gwinn at center, and Chick Chase and Ralph Maloof at the guard spots was the starting combination used by Conrad. Primarily using a slow break, playing a ball control and passing game, augmented by spurts of fast break play, the Hornets looked good in the majority of their games, but unfortunately lacked the scoring punch when needed. The Hornet's top scorers were: Dick Gwinn, 163 points; Ralph Maloof, 135 points; Ed Perry, 132 points; and Parker Johnston with 101 points. Chick Chase and Maloof had the distinction of leading the personal foul list having a total of 126 fouls between them. Ralph Maloof was selected as team captain by a unanimous vote of the team.
