Rock bands, booths create carnival atmosphere at festival (CONTINUED) running as a write-in candidate. The announcement of the queen came in the midst of heavy rains and the sounds of the Nitty Gritty Dirt band as they played at the opening of the festival on Friday night, November 7. Miss Schneider’s court of four princesses, Senior Betty Beadon, Junior Claudia Lambie, Sophomore Kathy Davies, and Freshman Denise Downs, were also on stage to congratulate the slender blonde queen. Official crowning took place at the football game Saturday night. Then the 49ers went on to defeat the Fresno State Bulldogs 37-7. The festival began at 2 p.m. Friday when students began to fill the wet campus to hear the music of the Helium Camel; The World, the Flesh and the Devil; The Drifters; and The Wrought Iron. Due to weather conditions, the dance was moved to the Cafeteria, which attracted more people and seemed to generate a feeling of togetherness. While the festival music rocked the campus, organizations provided food and games. Zeta Beta Tau sold bagels, Alpha Phi whirled cotton candy, and Phi Kappa Tau served Polish sausage sandwiches. AWS quenched thirsts with soft drinks, and those with a sweet tooth bought donuts from the Newman Club. The Christian Science organization provided a mysterious witch’s brew. In order to relieve any hostilities, participants tossed water-filled balloons, shaving cream pies, and eggs. Quite a crowd gathered around the Vet’s Club Balloon Bust booth where balloons were placed on photos of buxom females. Phil Tondreault, one of the festival’s organizers, stated that he considered the festival a success. A worthwhile goal, festivities, fun, and a happy queen all combined to begin a hopefully long lasting tradition at CSLB, the Fall Festival. 28 Ken Miller crowns Joyce Schneider Miss CSLB” as Princesses Claudia Lambie, Betty Beadon, Denise Downs, and Kathy Davies look on.
