When construction is completed, the campus will have 60 structures, not including residences. ... and people change in need of more room. During the school’s first semester. 160 students were taught by 13 staff members. Today’s 27,000 students learn from a faculty of 1.300 full-and part-time instructors who teach anything from paper airplane folding to linguistic methodology in morphology and syntax. The experimental college of the present was far from the minds of the 1950 administrators when they decided to expand the curriculum and hold classes after4:30p.m. Starting with a graduating class of 31 seniors. Long Beach State has conferred degrees to more than 32,000 students, a number which is steadily on the rise. Not everything, however, is changing fast enough to meet the growth and demands of the college. Pre- registration. which started in 1956, is still a problem to students every semester. The walk up the hill and the search for a close parking space are other hardships that seem destined to stay with us. But the times are changing, and the college still grows. Old people leave, new people come. What will they bring with them in the new decade that insists on being the history of Cal State Long Beach? A campus $tow$ . . . Los Angeles-Orange County State College was established on January 27, 1949, to serve the needs of Orange County and the southeast portion of Los Angeles County. The result of a survey by the State Department of Education and the U.C. Regents, the creation of the college was given the go ahead when Earl Warren, then governor of California, approved an assembly bill that converted an apartment building on Anaheim Street into a 13-room campus. On Sept. 28, 1949, the first 49ers fumbled their way to the classrooms through a maze of busy workmen, as the faculty competed valiantly with noises of trip hammers and buzz saws. Twenty- one years later, 49ers still fumble through the continual construction, and teachers shout above the din of cement mixers, cranes, and more buzz saws. Building on a 320-acre site donated in 1950 by the city of Long Beach.CSLB has been transformed into one of the largest institutes of higher education in California. Two years after the first classes convened on the new campus in 1951, ground breaking ceremonies took place on the upper campus. With completion of the master building plan in the next few years, 60 new structures were planned for a campus which is now CSLB 1969 aerial photo shows students enjoying a TGIF rock concert in the last large grass area.
