President's Message J e W Dear Graduates: At a time when many academic traditions have faded, l find it encouraging that Cal State students have reestablished a yearbook for graduates. Cal State is a university still at the threshold of becoming. Developed during a period when student roles were changing, it has yet to create a body of tradition on the campus. Most CSUH students commute, many take night classes only, many come with two years of community college experience already behind them. ln- dividuals progress according to their own abilities, needs and resources, making distinctions between freshman, sophomore, iunior, and senior difficult to define and of less significance than in older colleges. Nevertheless, those who persevere until they earn their degree share a sense of achievement and fulfillment, and seem to gain, as commencement approaches, a sense of unity which carries through the formal ceremony. This yearbook, the 1977 Horizons, will not only be a source of pride for those who receive it, it will record and preserve that sense of unity in the years to come. As a symptom of renewed interest in those traditions that have made universities more than iust a place to go to school, Horizons will help to make this university a special community for which we feel a special affection long after we leave. Graduation is not the end of our association, but the completion of the first step. I invite each of you to maintain your relationship with the university through the Alumni Association, and through my office. Your continued interest and support is essential to the further growth and improvement of Cal State. Ellis E. McCune, President ll .if 1 .- i-..-f

r 4 Student Government Students government saw many changes this yearp many new faces and many old problems. There were programs that produced successful student involvement, and others that were painful learning experiences. Through it all, the student leadership worked together, trying to achieve a unity and standard of excellence for all CSUH students to benefit from now and in the years ahead. 1 l lll' l l il, : ' i ll fabovej Tom Masnaghettl took over as Presidency Winter Quarter and Charlie Mason served as V.P. l ' if I t . - 1 9 Q 5 i t 5 r , k E 1 L Y 5 T- : 4 A 5 ' 4 ' 2 ' . 1 . 1 oi s' ,P ,z if 'fs 1 of-s ,AJ V l ..,. . - :-- .ji ,,.... .-My ,.
