HCRIZON 1977 ill 4, 4 fix ,FE Qs r' President's Message J e W Dear Graduates: At a time when many academic traditions have faded, l find it encouraging that Cal State students have reestablished a yearbook for graduates. Cal State is a university still at the threshold of becoming. Developed during a period when student roles were changing, it has yet to create a body of tradition on the campus. Most CSUH students commute, many take night classes only, many come with two years of community college experience already behind them. ln- dividuals progress according to their own abilities, needs and resources, making distinctions between freshman, sophomore, iunior, and senior difficult to define and of less significance than in older colleges. Nevertheless, those who persevere until they earn their degree share a sense of achievement and fulfillment, and seem to gain, as commencement approaches, a sense of unity which carries through the formal ceremony. This yearbook, the 1977 Horizons, will not only be a source of pride for those who receive it, it will record and preserve that sense of unity in the years to come. As a symptom of renewed interest in those traditions that have made universities more than iust a place to go to school, Horizons will help to make this university a special community for which we feel a special affection long after we leave. Graduation is not the end of our association, but the completion of the first step. I invite each of you to maintain your relationship with the university through the Alumni Association, and through my office. Your continued interest and support is essential to the further growth and improvement of Cal State. Ellis E. McCune, President ll .if 1 .- i-..-f Alumni l'The CSUH Alumni Association serves as the traditional tie between the Universi- ty and former student and blah, blah, blah . . . lt's a familiar pitch used by many alumni groups for the sake of the old alma mater-'lhere's what you get for your membership dues . . . Well, at CSUH one should ask WHO is the Alumni Association, because the CSUH Alumni Association is PEOPLE. ' The CSUHXAA is people like President Diana Black looking forward to a year of membership growth and new involvement in programs and services. lt's people like Vice President Frank Correia helping to generate interest in the Alumni Association by sponsorship of programs for current CSUH students like Beer Days and Graduate Brunch. lt's people like the 12 member board of directors helping to build strong support by bringing former students closer together by keeping them up-to-date with current CSUH news and starting new programs of interest to all CSUH Alumni. The CSUHXAA is people like YOU taking advantage of alumni programs like the Alumni Summer Picnic, use of CSUH library facilities, special discount rates to CSUH events and much more. ASSOCIATE LIFE SCIENCE STUDENTS The Associated Life Science Students QALSSQ is an organization of pre-professional students. lt provides a forum wherein students meet with spokespersons from the various professional schools. Recent activities of the ALSS include visits to the campus by Dr. Peter Van Houten, Director of Student Ad- vising and Assistance at U.C. Berkeley, who discussed factors and trends in medical school admissions. Dr. .lack Luomanen of the Berkeley Free Clinic, who discussed problems of admission to dental schools, Polly Wheat, a second year medical stu- dent at U.C. San Francisco Medical School and a former CSUH student, who related to students her ex- periences in the application and ad- mission to medical schoolp Dr. Robert Gibson, Director of Ad- missions at UCSF'School of Phar- macy, who talked about pharmacy school admissions and the job out- look for the profession, Dr. Lee Husting, then Director of Health Sciences at CSUH, who discussed opportunities for alternative health science careers. The students of ALSS also had the opportunity to tour UCSF Medical School, UOP Dental School lin San Franciscoj and UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Another highlight of last Year's activities was a venture into the fast food budiness world, when some ALSS pre- professionals prepared and sold submarine sandwiches at the Science Expo as our fund-raising event.
