FROSI-l BASKETBALL an 8 to O score. They finally managed to break into the win column on October 22, when they sent the Lassen Junior College scurrying home on the short end of a 13 to O score. The Aggie yearlings' powerhouse steam-rollered over the Kittens 39 to 14 the next week-end. The same week the fresh- man reserves smothered the Chico High second team, 12 to 0. The Yuba County Junior College eleven proved too much for the Delgado-coached men, as they were defeated again. This time on the short end of a 26-13 score. On Armistice Day the freshmen Wound up their grid wars, and they poured on the heat to down the Fort Bragg High school, 13 to O. BASKETBALL The greatest freshman quintet in the history of the school was Coach Art Acker's title for the 1938-39 yearling hoopsters. The players were awarded frosh numerals. This is the iirst time that a basketball team of first-year men has received this award. Their impressive record of 19 wins and only three losses shows their championship quality. These victories were turned in over teams through- out the northern section of the state, and the fresh- men triumphed over most of them with ease. Their two conference opponents, the California Aggies and the University of Nevada, were both taken in tow by the champs The freshmen were led by Cicne Hammerstrom, Stan Timone, and Sam Wolf. After Hammer- strom was moved up to the varsity, Timone and Dick Copland took over the forward posts. Bob Schlueter, Mackay Martin, Russ Morrison, and Martin Hall were always in there when the going got tough. Stan Ti-mone rang up the most impressive record of any Chico State basketball player in scoring. He tallied something over 350 points during the season. This tops all Wildcat men, either varsity or freshmen. TRACK Three men held up the honor of the first-year class in track. They were Don Hoffman, Sam Wolf, and Russ Morrison. Hoffman was Chico's leading pole vaulter, and secured several first places in this event. He also garnered a few points behind his older brother, Orrin, in the javelin throw. Morrison was the only prayer of the Wildcat thin- clads in the high jump, and his performances came as surprises to home and visitors alike. Wolf was one of the finds of the yearuin the discus throw, in which Chico was noticeably weak. He was able to throw out over 120 feet on several occasions for needed points.

TlCS The freshman football team, coached by Carl Delgado, all-conference Wildcat football star of 1938, was a squad con- sisting almost entirely of former high school grid stars and showed great pos- sibilities at the Hrst of the 1938 season. However, it wasn't easy to get the lads who were used to having the team built around them to change over and be a part of a football machine. As a result the yearlings did not win as many games as they might have. The season ended with the Frosh coming through with three victories, two ties, and three losses. The hrst-year men opened their sea- son September 24 at Red Bluff, where the Spartans held the Kittens to a scoreless tie. The next week they were again held to a tie by the Panthers of Chico High in a battle for the city championship.
