A E 4. Al I . Back row: Paul Calderhead. Vifillard Lane. Bud Swensen. Gene Hammerstrorn, Art XVhitmer, Ron Farley. Second row: Jack Uren Al Schlueter, Hal Taylor, Len Stenberg. Dave Sigel. Front row: John Moiso. Stan Dison, Irving Schoenfeld, Mark Marlais. VARSITY SQUAD mined to make up for the upset of the previous night. With Swensen, Whitmer, and Schlueter running up the points to establish a 22 to 14 lead at halftime, Chico held the lead until the final whistle. Thirty-four to twenty-seven was the final score. NGN-CONFERENCE SEASON The Wildcats opened with a two-game series with Hust Brothers, winning the first, 23-21, and showing more improvement to win the second. 55-32. Next was a 44-42 thriller with Modesto J. C. Taylor holed out with a long one to put the game on ice with only seconds to go. Whittier College lost another pair to the unbeaten Cardinals by the tune of 43-30 and 50-37. By this time. Poppa Acker had a smooth Working combina- tion in the front ranks. Traveling to Redding, the Wildcats ran rough- shod over the Redding Junior Chamber of Com- merce, 56-l4., Dave Sigel had established himself as one of the finest backboard men in the confer- ence by this period of the season. Bud Swensen was capably filling the shoes of All-Conference Len Stenberg. Captain Art Whitmer was proving to be the all-around handy man. The Wildcats next went to Ashland and met their first defeat, 4l-38. Kemnitzer and Walt Sether were tops for the Sons. Returning back to their home court, the Cardi- nals evened things up with Sacramento J. C. by scores of 59-29 and 58-34. Schlueter scored 38 points in this series. ln the California Polytechnic series, Chico again won both, 46-23 and 51-27. At Arcata the following week-end, the Cats could not hold the Humboldt Staters and dropped a 43-32 decision. It was a bad night for Chico and nothing The FOX could do seemed to help. Only consolation was the brilliant playing of Gene Ham- -merstrom, freshman iind. ln the two final series of non-conference games, Chico split with both teams. With San Francisco State, the Cardinals won the first encounter 51-33 and then turned around and let the Gaters chalk up a 44-37 victory. At Ashland, Chico lost a close game to the S. O. N. S. in the first meeting, and then reversed the proceedings and won by 2 points over their hosts. Scores were, 40-39 and 39-37.

STATE 86, CHICO 45 In the first track and Held meet of the year, the Chico team came upon some of its toughest compe- tition. Herman Kostiz, Doug Whited, Orrin Hoff- man, and Bob Reams were the Chico stars. Whited came through with first places in the 440-yard dash and the 220-yard low hurdles. His times were :5l.7 and 2252. Kostiz ran a beautiful 880 in 2:02.2 to edge out Crane and Shepard of San Francisco. He also was second in the mile behind Fred Kline of the Caters. .
