'EA is 355 fm VARSHW'BASKETBALL l938J939 After starting the season out in championship form, the Wildcats were installed as the favorites to cop the Far Western Conference crown. Composed of practically the same team as that of 1937, hopes for a pennant were high. The Cardinals were denied top honors when the California Aggies from Davis ART ACKER put over a double trimming on the Chico outlit. The Cats Coach wound up in second place with five wins, three losses in con- ference play. Following the opener with I-lust Brothers of Marysville, Chico won six in a row. Then the Chicoans lost a heartbreaker to the Sons of Ashland, 41-38. Throughout the season this - same relation of wins and losses continued, with Chico winning BUD SWENSEN 22 games and losing 9. Letters were awarded ll men of the Guard l938-39 Wildcat varsity. Men receiving Block HC letters were: Captain Art Whitmer, Al Schlueter, Art Swensen, Dave Sigel, Irving Schoenfeld, Len Stenberg, Hal Taylor, John Moiso. Stan Dison, Paul Calderhead, and Gene Hammerstrom. During the year, Schlueter set an all-time high scoring record for the varsity of 369 points. HAL TAYLOR 1939 CONFERENCE SEASON Forward Starting off with the University of Nevada, the Wildcats returned home from the biggest little city in the world with a clean slate. The first game was Chico all the way, with the final score being 43-25. The varsity was then composed of Swensen and Taylor, forwards: Whitmer and Sigel, guards, and Schlueter, center. The Wolves made a game of the second encounter and at the final whistle Chico led 38-32. Schlueter AL SCHLUETER led the scorers in both contests. Center With this double win over Nevada and only one pre-season game lost, hopes for another championship ran high, but the crushing blow was yet to come. The second game, played on the Chico court, showed the Cards again outclassed as the invad- ers rang up 54 points to Chico's 42. Whitmer and Taylor were sparkplugs of the home town team. Realizing that only fate could keep them in the champion- ship race now, the Wildcats really took it out on their next guests. lt happened to be Fresno State. The first game ended with Chico going around the scoreboard to 62. Fresno had 33. Al Schlueter had credit for 2l of the Cardinal points. Hal Taylor made l2. The second night the Bulldogs came back with fire in their eyes, and at half-time they were leading, 33 to 25. With an inspiring talk from The Fox, Chico came back and held the Fresnans to one field goal in the second half. Final score Was: Chico 44, Fresno 36. Toby Lawless was outstanding for the Bulldogs, scoring 27 points. Al Schlueter led both teams with 40 points for the two nights. Next in line Was the College of Pacinc, cellar team. Not conceded a chance to take the second-place Chico team, the Tigers poured it on in the first game to win a 42-34 victory. Hugh lVlcWillia1ns was the key factor in the Win. His l5 points, plus his floor generalship, was the deciding note.
