CAPPELLA CI-IDIR With the largest group of students ever to par- ticipate, the A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Miss Ruth Rowland, opened the season by pre- senting a program for Teachers' Institute in Chico on November 24. Soloists were Helen Canevari, Cath- erine Franck, and Ruth Rowland, sopranos: Jua- nita Kendrick, contralto: Carl Delgado, tenor: Wallace Matthews, baritone. Miss Marjorie Nataas was at the piano, and Maxwell Sypher was at the organ. During the Christmas season the choir also sang carols for the Rotary Club and sang carols three times over the chimes amplifying system. These programs were enjoyed and appreciated by the community. The big event of the year for the choir was rep- resenting Chico 'State at the Golden Gate Interna- tional Exposition on April 14. MUSIC HELEN CANEVARI A Cappella Choir TOM HOWELL Chico State Band MARJORIE NATAAS College Orchestra Q Three musicians picked as outstanding at the col- lege are Helen Canevari, Tom Howell, and Mar- jorie Nataas. These stu- dents have helped greatly to place Chico State in an enviable position among California colleges in the music field. Helen has been in the A Cappella Choir for the past two years and was soprano soloist for Bohemian Girl last spring. Tom is not only a member of the band, but has taken over the duties of leader of the Cardinal Pep Band for all athletic contests and rallies. Marjorie, in her turn, is a member of both the band and orchestra, and Pop Young and Mrs. Greening are both proud of her accom- plishments. The music department has gone far and beyond that of any previous year. In addition to several concerts throughout northern California, the Chico State A Cappella Choir sang at the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. The band and orchestra have also had a full year of programs. Plans for next year include another operetta, more Chico concerts, and a more extensive tour of the state.

Concluding a most successful year numbers were sung for commencement and baccalaureate. The Chico State Band, under the direction of Paul Howard Young, has gained a great deal of experience and had a lot of fun in the many activities that have kept them busy in both fall and spring semesters. The first big job was to keep pep at all the home football games. So much interest was shown that they even followed the team to Ashland, where, in the frozen air, they put on a brilliant display of snappy marching and playing. At any request the band would play in parades or give pro- grams. Several swing programs during assembly periods were enjoyable. ji! . .la Above are pictured two of the college A Cappella Choir soloists, Carl Del- gado, tenor, and Helen Canevari, so- prano. l l Below is a group shot of the Chico l State A Cappella Choir.
