DRAMATICS J. FREDERICK JOHNSON HELEN DE RUCHIE MERLE RUSSELL GEORGE BUTTS Q Typical of the high standard of acting is that done by the four drama- tists at the college pictured here. At the upper left is James Frederick Johnson, who has played many of n - the major leads in Chico State productions since coming to the college in 1935. On his right is Helen De Ruchie, feminine lead on numerous occasions. Lower right We have George Butts, who plays characters of pomp and ceremony with all the naturalness that years of experience can give him. Merle Russell, at the lower left, usually takes the roles of elder persons, although he sometimes is given difficult comedy parts. The dramatics department tried several difficult plays during the fall and spring semesters. In the spring, Hamlet was presented on May l8 during the conference of Par Western dramatics. Humboldt State College was the guest of Chico State for this event. Hay Fever Was offered earlier in the year and many thought this the best play of the season.
