A.B-, M.A. Dean of Men LEADERS While the consensus has been that pro- fessors spend all their time writing scathing remarks on would-be scholars' papers, mem- bers of Chico State's faculty during the past year have disputed the statement. To back up their opinions they have made notable achieve- ments in education circles. Probably the most outstanding single piece of work was done by Hugh M. Bell, associate profes- sor of psychology and dean of the lower division, who had published in October of last year an Adjustment Inventory in adult form. This consisted of test, manual, and scoring key. It was published by the Stanford University Press. The work itself is considered a step forward in the field of psychological research, V Two more members of the college faculty were able to obtain their Master's Degree during the past school year. One was Miss Jane W. Schurmer, acting assistant professor of physical education, and the other was Mr. Arthur L. Acker, head of the physical education department. Some of the other noteworthy achievements of Chico State professors should be brought out in detail. Dr. Floyd Caldwell's Suggestions to Teachers in Guiding the Child's Experiences was pub- lished in the Butte County schools manual in September 1938. Dr. Vesta Holt and Lloyd G. Ingles of the college science department were co-authors of a Syllabus in General Biology published in August by Stanford University Press. Dr. Ingles also had many lesser articles in various magazines R. W. VAN ALSTYNE, A.B.. FACU LTY AYMER J. HAMILTON College President Q You are living in a democracy. Your needs are. therefore, naturally the needs of one who must think and act freely. If you repay the State for the cost of your training you will have developed an understanding of and a faith in Democracy as a Way of life. It is impossible to have done this without having developed a moral fiber and a stamina which you could have easily done without had you lived in a country Whose educational philosophy Was determined by a dictator. You are, therefore, among the favored of the world. You will soon have a share in the development of democratic institutions. Are you at home in the history of these institutions? You Will soon be helping to readjust the schemes of social organization and helping in the solution of societysproblems. You will soon be competing with leaders of a world composed of many nations. Are you familiar with languages and are you at home with the great spirits of all ages, including your own, Whose labor and sacrifice and idealism have helped to create the society of which you are a part? If you have a feeling of inadequacy in facing the complexity of social prob- lems then your hope lies in remembering that commencement is the beginning of education and not the end. AYMER JAY HAMILTON, President of the College.
