G er In addition to the regular physical educa- tion program, the girls participate in three ac- tivities: Girls' Athletic Association iG.A.A.l, the Volleyball Team and the Tumbling Team, under the direction of Miss Aletha Emerick and Miss Rita Gesue. The purposes of the G.A.A. are to teach good sportsmanship by providing a competi- tive and recreational program and to foster an interest in sports as an aid to physical dev- elopment and healthful recreation after grad- uation. Membership in G.A.A. is confined to the sixty-six girls in Upper School. They meet each Tuesday and Thursday at 3:45 p.m. Ac- cording to the season they participate in bas- ketball, volleyball, swimming, softball and field hockey. They are organized into teams for each sport and engage in intra-mural play- offs. Some outside competition is offered through Play Days with public high schools. These are held several times a year. Awards are made on the basis of participa- tion and behavior. Additional points can be earned by serving as lifeguard or manager of a sport. Members of the Volleyball Team are chosen for their leadership qualities, physical skill and scholastic ability. This team engages in competition with the Arizona School for the Deaf and the School for the Deaf in Berkeley. Future plans call for participation in the Rec- reational League of the City Recreation De- partment. This would give the girls an op- portunity to play once a week with other high school teams. The Tumbling Team is composed of thirty- three boys and girls. ranging in age from 9 to 20 years. Members of this group are chosen for their special ability in gymnastics, Each year they demonstrate their skill at the Phvsi- cal Education Program. ' Page Fifty-Three
