We have enioyed our years in Upper School, thanks to his guiding hand. His kindness, understanding, pati- ence, and interest have won him a very warm place in our hearts. Page Three Page Four Superintendent To the Members of the Class of 1959: Congratulations to each member of the Class of 1959. Your school has tried to teach you the basic principles of a successful life. We have tried to teach you to be a responsible person, to be honest, to Work hard, to be thoughtful of others, and to be a good citizen. We have tried to teach you the essentials of useful knowledge and skills. Up until now, your parents and your school have been assuming most of the responsibility for you. Gradually, we have been giving you more and more responsibility, and now is the time for you to assume it all. If you have learned the basic principles and the basic knowledges, you are ready to assume these responsibilities. Our best Wishes for a successful, happy life go with you. RICHARD G. Officers elected at the first meeting were, President, Anne Wallis, Vice-president, Jack Salisbury, Secretary, Virginia Wauson, and Treasurer, Shirley Hill. Beginning in March, 1958, we undertook to raise money for our class fund. Candy was sold daily io the students and lhe faculty at several places on the campus. Hoi' dogs, cold drinks, coffee were sold at our home athletic games. We washed cars one Saturday each month. During April and May we did much work on plans for the Junior-Senior dance which was held on May 31. The theme was By the Sea. We decorated for lhe commencement exercises and also served as ushers. Returning 'io CSDR in Seplember, 1958, we were full-fledged seniors and received our class rings. Three members of our Junior class did not return and one became a member, so this made twenty-one seniors. Anne Wallis was re-elected class president and Jack Salisbury was retained as vice-president. Virginia Fallin continued as class secretary, into which place she had stepped during her Junior year because of the departure of the first secretary. Henry Barnes became treasurer. T'hose on the SCARLET AND GRAY staff were: Shirley Hill, editor, Molly Merritt, Karen Roach, Fred Sweetland and Pat Zvada. We had class meetings every Tuesday afternoon. It was our good fortune to help sell concessions at Riverside City Colleges four home football games. Our share of the profits swelled the class treas- ury considerably. We also sold Kathryn Beich candy and Christmas cards. By December we had reached our goal and this permitted the Junior Class to take over when school resumed in January. From January through May, work on the SCARLET AND GRAY progressed in earnest. On Sunday, March 21, Mr. and Mrs. Zvada invited us to a surprise birthday party for Pat. A buffet style dinner consisting of baked ham and fried chicken with all the trimmings was served. We enioyed the food and had fun playing croquet, horseshoes, badminton and throwing darts. We were at Catalina Island on May 1 and 2. The holiday outing was thoroughly enjoyed by all. After this came the Junior-Senior dance, class night and the senior banquet. It is with mixed feeling that we view the approach of graduation. We will go our separate ways with many pleasant memories of CSDR, accented by the events of our senior year. Virginia Fallin Page Thzr y Fwe Class Prophecy IT IS 1978 on the 25th anniversary of CSDR during which the Class of 1959 plans to have a reunion. As our story begins we find Henry Barnes, who has become head football coach at C.S.D., Berkeley, at home making plans to call all the 1959 graduates for the Class Reunion in Feb- ruary, for which he is chairman. He sits down to his TV-phone, which has been a boon to the deaf. First, he calls Ronald Caselman in Santa Monica where he is a hair dresser in a fashionable beauty salon. After a short visit, Henry tells him about the reunion. Next he contacts Richard Cato who is a first class mechanic at the McComber Ford Dealers in Los Angeles. After numerous calls to various places, he finally locates Margaret Dewey at the CBS-TV studios in Hollywood where she is busily mak- ing costumes for television performers. A call to Lori Kevil finds her at her IBM key punch machine at Lockheed Aircraft Cor- poration in Burbank. Virginia Fallin is married and living in Phoenix. She has triplets, Tom, Dick and Harry, who are about 11 years of age and keep her very busy. The directory shows he must call East now to New York City where he reaches Dolores Grigsby at her fashionable Dress Shoppe. One of her best customers is Karen Roach who models clothing at the more exclusive stores in New York. She is in the shop just as Henry calls. Both are enthusiastic about the reunion and plan to come. Henry now calls Shirley Hill Chadwick in San Diego where he finds her at home in the midst of a vacuum cleaner demonstration by a salesman who is none other than David Robinson. tShe doesn't buy one. She must talk to her husband first.J He finds Harold Jackson fitting a suit for Gilbert Delgado in Harold's Ments Store in San Francisco. Molly Merritt has wandered farthest away Page Thirty-Sta: from home and is found in Paris at her de- signing board creating fashions for leading ladies throughout the world. Jack Salisbury is happily engaged as a lino- typist for the Los Angeles Times. For recreai tion we find he has continued to play basket- ball and is the star player for the Valley Silent Club. Little Nancy Scallon has moved to Rome, Italy, where her once trim figure has taken on tremendous pounds. She just couldn't let that spaghetti alone. Kathy Stirling was found among her first love, at the University of California at Los Angeles, where she is Chief Assistant to the head librarian. After graduation Fred Sweetland joined the rush to Alaska where he is found with his hands in the dough-in Juneau-where he is chief pastry baker for a large commercial bakery. Vera Vasquez has become a florist in San Diego where she turns out the most exquisite floral arrangements. In addition to caring for her husband and home Anne Wallis spends four days a week as an instructor of physical culture at a health studio in Culver City. Pat Zvada has been doing his part in speed- ing the march toward conquering space by assembling precision parts for rocket ships at Rohr Aircraft in Riverside. Wayne Williford has found his place in the servicing and towing of automobiles on the highway. He is following in the footsteps of his father. The final call was made to Ronald Bough- ton who is employed as a machinist at the Convair Plant in San Diego. The months fly by-October, November, December, and January, and finally February arrives . . . as do all the grads of 1959. A wonderful time is had by all as they recount experiences since leaving school as well as re- calling memories of school days. Class Will We, the Class of 1959, being of sound mind and body, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament. Before leaving our dear school we wish to bequeath certain of our possessions to the following individuals with the hope that they will make good use of them. Henry Barnes would like to see PETER NATALE eat more and improve his avoirdupois, so he leaves him a bag of peanuts as a good way to get started. Ronald Boughton wills to JAMES MANUEL a book on how to lose weight and hopes he will be able to curb his appetite and at the same time get more exercise. To DON WINANT, Ronald Caselman gives a hair kit, so he won't have to struggle with his hair any more. Richard Cato, knowing DANNY VALDEZ is interested in talking about cars, wills him a book on cars. Margaret Dewey leaves her enjoyment of watching TV to FRANCIS HUCKINS and hopes he will enjoy many cartoons on this miniature TV set. Lori Kevil knows KAREN DIENST delights in playing tricks on the girls and bequeaths to her a collection of novelty items which she can use to scare them. In view of DONNA CARPENTER'S dislike for spinach, Gigi Fallin wills her a can of this green vegetable and urges her, for health's sake, to develop a liking for it. Dolores Grigsby bequeaths a mirror and a comb to SONIA KRACER so that at all times she can use them to keep her hair looking neat and pretty. To CAROL LEE WALES, Shirley Hill leaves her fondness for clothes with the gift of a flour sack dress. Harold Jackson realizes that RUSSELL THEXTON needs to learn good table manners and wills him a book on etiquette. BARBARA GOLDMAN may some day wish she could draw so Molly Merritt bequeaths her some art materials tcoloring book and crayonsj so that she can try to develop the skill. Karen Roach bequeaths to PAUL WINDFELD'l' a lei as a memento of the pleasure they had in talking about ilawaii. To DAVID OLSON, David Robinson wills a set of barbells for developing his muscles. Jack Salisbury leaves his ability to play basketball to BILL RAMBORGER. ta basketbally. Nancy Scallon leaves a fan to DOROTHY STIGGER and would like for her to use it to keep her temper from getting too hot. Kathy Stirling wills to PEGGY DOMENICK her interest in reading books. To KENNETII GARNER, Fred Sweelland wills a book cn how to date. so he will become more interested in girls. Vera Vasquez leaves her sweet disposition and bright smile to RONALD VIDUYA with this sign Try Smiling. Anne Wallis would like for MR. BLEA to keep on using her favorite ex- pression, Oh, Baloney! , so as a reminder she wills him a roll of bologna. Wayne Williford leaves his calm disposition to ANN NEWBY ia bottle of candy tranquilizersl. Page Thirty Seven 4 1 I w V 1 W5 u Y v ,f.W,v.v--..-www-.,....,..,,. The team has improved greatly over the previous years. Blocking and tackling were crisperg ball carriers ran harder and pass plays clicked more often. The outlook for the future continues to look brighter. Although we are losing two of this year's team through graduation, other promising players are Coming along. They are showing grit and determination on the field. We are looking forward to a more competitive football season in the future. High-lights of the season were the thrilling three point win over the Arizona School and the sizzling 95-47 conquest of Notre Dame High School. The hearthreaker of the year was the two point loss to Berkeley lfor the second year in a rowl. Prospects for the coming year seem bright. Though we will miss the floor leader- ship and scoring ability of Jack Salisbury, it looks as if Don Winant may he able to fill his shoes. Butch Gongaware and John Darby showed steady improvs-me-nt under the boards and should contribute more in the scoring department next year. Ken Garner and Bob Phillips should continue as scoring threats. Phillips' outstanding play won him a berth on the Arrowhead All League Team and we look for even hotter things from him next year. G er In addition to the regular physical educa- tion program, the girls participate in three ac- tivities: Girls' Athletic Association iG.A.A.l, the Volleyball Team and the Tumbling Team, under the direction of Miss Aletha Emerick and Miss Rita Gesue. The purposes of the G.A.A. are to teach good sportsmanship by providing a competi- tive and recreational program and to foster an interest in sports as an aid to physical dev- elopment and healthful recreation after grad- uation. Membership in G.A.A. is confined to the sixty-six girls in Upper School. They meet each Tuesday and Thursday at 3:45 p.m. Ac- cording to the season they participate in bas- ketball, volleyball, swimming, softball and field hockey. They are organized into teams for each sport and engage in intra-mural play- offs. Some outside competition is offered through Play Days with public high schools. These are held several times a year. Awards are made on the basis of participa- tion and behavior. Additional points can be earned by serving as lifeguard or manager of a sport. Members of the Volleyball Team are chosen for their leadership qualities, physical skill and scholastic ability. This team engages in competition with the Arizona School for the Deaf and the School for the Deaf in Berkeley. Future plans call for participation in the Rec- reational League of the City Recreation De- partment. This would give the girls an op- portunity to play once a week with other high school teams. The Tumbling Team is composed of thirty- three boys and girls. ranging in age from 9 to 20 years. Members of this group are chosen for their special ability in gymnastics, Each year they demonstrate their skill at the Phvsi- cal Education Program. KATHLYN STIRLING Page Fifty-Six Valedictory Dr. Johnson, Dr. Brill, Mr. Turechek, Parents, Friends and Fellow Students: Tonight, we, the Class of 1959, bid farewell to the counselors, teachers, and others on the staff who have made our stay at CSDR both pleasant and profitable. It is difficult to find words to adequately express our feelings and our appreciation to these good friends and helpers. They shall no longer be available to us to guide us when we may feel the need of assistance. We are now on our own, and l am sure that each of us will remember and apply the knowledge and experience gained from them. To these folks, we say Thanks a mil- lion. To the next graduating class, we, too, say farewell with the knowledge that they very soon will follow in our footsteps To them we also say, Use each precious moment for the greatest good. Let not the minutes slip away in uselessness. To our parents we extend a heartfelt Thank you for seeing us through this important period of our lives and for sending us to CSDR. The paths we will follow are yet quite dim and uncharted. Some of us hope to go to college. The rest of us hope to find employment and take our places in society aiming at the conquering of space. But, whatever paths we may follow, we shall endeavor to reflect honor upon our Alma Mater.
