The California Military Academy, asthe principal source ofofficers
for the California National Guard, has commissioned almost 2000
officers since its inception in 1951. The Academy is accredited by
the Department of the Army and uses a program of instruction
and materials from the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia. The
curriculum exceeds 400 hours, based on the resident Officer Can-
didate School program, augmented state subjects and an annual
orientation trip to Fort Benning and Washington, D.C,
The California Military Aoademy's attrition or Wash Out rate
is over 5070, reflecting an increasingly difficult set of standards.
The cadets are under constant observation designed to produce
pressure and emotional stress and evaluate their ability and fortitude
under mental strain. The advantages in this pressure system,
coupled with strong academic standards, are best measured by
the success of graduates now on active duty. Whenever we hear
from one of our eighty plus alumni now serving with the Active

Army, they consistently advise that their Academy training has per-
mitted them to effectively compete with their contemporaries,
regardless of their source of commission, whether Fort Benning
Officer Candidate School, Reserve Officers Training Corps or West
Point.
An example of their professionalism and devotion to duty is the
number of decorations these officers have received for heroism
in Vietnam. These include a Distinguished Service Cross, eight Silver
Stars, nine Distinguished Flying Crosses, twenty-two Bronze Stars
and thirteen Purple Hearts. In addition, one officer has been
nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor.
ln these troubled times, it is necessary that all military leaders
be immediately available for duty and able to perform in such a
manner as to insure success of the mission with a minimum of
danger for their subordinates. We are proud that our graduates
have successfully met this challenge.
