The old year passes with cheers, smiling faces, proud Kingsmen with hearts ready to burst, coaches, wives and alums with tears in their eyes and a wet, happy coach raising his arm and pointing to heaven. It ' s great to be Number 1 ! December 4, 1971, was California Lutheran College ' s finest hour. The hopes and dreams of 10 years were real, national recognition ... at last. To completely recap the 2nd year of Champions would be an impossible task. Maybe a brief synopsis will suffice.

CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN COLLEGE 8 ALUMNI 6 A night game at Thousand Oaks High School, a big crowd and a close game marked the opener. Richard Kelley ' s field goal made the difference as CLC came from behind with an 80 yard drive with minutes to play and won with only seconds left. CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN COLLEGE 31 AUGUSTANA COLLEGE 31 The Kingsmen went to the heart of America and proved to over 5,000 fans that Cal Lutheran College never quits. Down twice, CLC rallied with no time-outs and 85 yards to go on a big 61 yard pass to Ralph Miller. Six new defensive men learned a lot about football that night. CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN COLLEGE 31 UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS 7 Bruce Drake and Ralph Miller teamed up to score and the CLC defense came back to life for an easy home opener. CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN COLLEGE 20 WHITTIER COLLEGE 7 A first ever home night game in Simi and a -26 rush- ing effort by the CLC defense proved decisive. Sub Quarterback Kip Downen provided the offensive spark as the Kingsmen kept alive their domination of Whittier. CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN COLLEGE 6 LAVERNE 6 The Kingsmen hit rock bottom with an inept perform- ance, although La Verne had a lot to do with it. Four field goals were all the scores, but a Cal Lutheran field goal block with 17 seconds left kept a tie from being a loss. CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN COLLEGE 24 CAL STATE FULLERTON 14 An undefeated and high stepping Titan team was de- molished before 4,500 astonished fans at Thousand Oaks High School by underdog CLC. It was a total win by the Kingsmen in all departments. CSF went on to beat PCAA champ, Fresno State. 89
