Some of these were good: some were bad. But changes and the experience that comes from them has made us what we are today. Some of us at Calhi loved school, and some of us hated it. Some of us were involved in many activities, but some of us were not. But through the immense variety of activi- ties and personalities. Annual Staff tried to focus upon the very heart of Calhi; and m doing so sought and found Silver Among the Blue and Gold, which is reflected by the thoughts and feelings of those who attended Calhi in the year of its silver jubilee. 1. In the End As the sun sinks beneath the earth, a strange breeze blows across the canyons of my mind, it is trying to tell me something that my ears have yet to accept. It is saying that a once common thing has come to an end. And as I look at the trees I wonder what the sun has in store for me. I wonder if it will shine in my soul like it has so many times before. And as I walk across the grass, I can read its feelings. It is wondering if it shall feel my footsteps during the early morning hours. The rooms wonder if they shall see me enter with a smile once again; and the desks wonder if I shall again rest my head on them. But I ' ve only to be honest -with them. As they all await an answer, my mind is at work wondering also what the future will bring, but I ' m still in conflict with the past. I hear my name and I know they all want an answer from 1 me, but there are still thoughts clashing in my mind; all at once I ' m covered with blue, and I know the answer that I have searched for within my soul. I go to the voices that await me. I stand in front of the big tall structures and in sorrow I shake my head, and suddenly my eyes turn to tears. I say goodby and put out my right foot to take the first step . . . Jane Fischer ■ ONE LAST LOOK AT THE SENIOR CLASS ASB President: Randy Gruendyke Dear Friends: In Cal-Hi s twenly-five years there have been numerous events that have shaped her history, as well as the lives of her students. One of the most significant periods came during the Vietnam war. From it stemmed a national outbreak of protest on campuses all across the United States by students in search of values. Following the war. with no cause or reason to protest, a great apathy set in to student life. Unity and spirit were almost non-existent and most activities were carried on for the sake of tradition. Cal-Hi was no different from the rest. The number of clubs decreased: the dedication of athletes dwindled, and schoo! spirit became almost a thing of the past. Not any longer: for you, the members of this year ' s student body, have put an end to the chapter of dissension in Cal-HTs history, and have begun a positive one. Your cooperation and concern have been exhibited in your conduct at assemblies. Your school spirit and support have been unequaled by any other student body, and in athletics, you have excelled by producing champions and championship teams. There are still tensions and conflicts in today ' s world. We. the generation of tomorrow must be prepared to meet and tackle them head on. With the cooperation, spirit, and concern demonstrated by this year ' s student body, there is no doubt in my mind that those tensions and conflicts can be overcome. It is a large country we live in. and the task of improving and refining it is great. Let us look to God for strength, wisdom and endurance as we work together for the betterment of this land and each other. Thank you Cal-Hi for the countless memories and numerous friendships. Their first big project was Homecoming, with an after game dance being one of the biggest of the year. They also put on Turkey day, Christmas cheer week and Mayday celebration. One of the major projects of the year was the Stash the Trash program of publicity, prevention, and punishment. Another was the Dippy Dinner, held to celebrate the CIF bound Varsity basketball team, as well as to rai.se money for a new P.A. system in the gym. Congress had a great deal of support from their advi- sor Ms. McCauley. With her help, they provided good leadership this year and are to be commended for their efforts. Our students come to us from Mexico, South America, Western Europe, the Orient and Austria. Most students come to live with American families for a period of one year, but some South American stu- dents come for a six mt)nth period. Since its inception i n Southern California in 1964-65. Calhi has sent twenty students on the summer program and four students for a year ' s stay m a foreign country overseas. Ihis experience has brought to them a greater awareness of the unique diversities of people from other cultures: a confidence and self assuredness within themselves: knowledge of language, customs, and geogra- phy and also a deeper understanding of people through a family living experience. It could be an experience which might have a profound influence on many lives, yours and your family and friends from a foreign land. Then I go back to Denmark I ' m going to ,tell all the students that are interested in coming out to California tfiat they won ' t regret it. I love you all. f AS GODT PA JER SELV OG LEV VEL. Led by Paul Franklin and Jayne Gilbert the CIA feels that they have lived up to their name! They were involved in the planning and giving of Thanksgiving dinner to needy families of Calhi. CIA visited the Head Start program and several convalescent homes. The Statesmen were involved in building the new Calhi Condors sign, which can be seen above the Gym. The CIA would like to thank Miss Cohick for all her help and support during the past year. Without her, much of this would not have been possible. With a new director, many new freshmen, and a very different schedule, the band came through putting on great performances every time. The band and auxiharies had to go through a lot this year, mcludmg six half-time shows and marchmg m the pouring ram at the Santa Monica Band Review. However, they made it through the season, improving with every performance. The climax of the marching season came when the band placed second at the Whittier Union High School District Band Jamboree half-time competition; the only direct competition between all the bands in the district. As I look back on my four years in band, especially these last two as Drum Major. I remember all the good times and good experiences that I have had, and 1 would now like to thank the band and auxiliary members for these experiences and for all their hard work. I hope that the band will grow and improve as they have done in the past, and that more people will get interested in finding out what band is all about Andy Osman 1977-78 Drum Major 1. Paul Franklin shows his kicking form in pre-game warm ups. I he CDndors of 1977 did something that a Varsity football team had not done smce 1969, they won their first league title in eight ears and visited the CI F play-offs. After a slow start in which they lost their first 3 games, the Condors came on strong to win their remaining si.x games and clinch a co- championship with La Serna. However, the Condors met their match in a CIF game against a tough l.ynwood High team, losing 3()-13. When members were asked what made this team different from the others on which they have run, the answer has always been the same, This team ran as a unit and not as individuals, Coach Jones realized this when it came time to hand out the traditional awards at the end of the year. Instead of giving out the customary MVP, Most Improved, and Coaches Aw ' ards, he decided to honor FIVE members of his Varsity squad. Coach Jones gave them all Coaches Awards to signify Most Valuable Players of the team in the eyes of the coach. With the acquisition of John Kiser from West Virginia, the Condors received the Whitmont League ' s leading runner for the year of 1977. But it wasn ' t a one man effort, the presence of seniors John Taylor and David Keck gave the team the added incentive that was needed to win. With the consistency of runners Lyie Dodd and Scott Maryott. the team, achieved their ranking of second in League with a record of 5-2, and a chance to go to the CIF finals. l ' n, hSoph Tec m Fr( nt row; D Lonieli, T. Fifth period in A 104 was. of course, where the members of Annual Staff met every day to create the Talon. The con- version of ideas and notions onto paper was not an easy job. but was one which the 1978 Talon Staff handled with care and dedication if not skill. Lee (Senese) never seemed to remember to return the pens we lent him. and Kirk (McLaughlin) could never recall our job number (30878, Kirk!). Jeff (Corbetl). the staff photographer by the way. where is he now? — often wandered off. Janet (Conley) had awful luck with the rainfall; consequently, she often arrived just a few minutes ate. The whole staff worked together to make Annual Staff what it was. a group of enthusiastic individuals who abored long and hard to make Silver Among the Blue and Gold a reality. For Editor-in-Chief Carla Sciarro and Co-Editors Brian Cass and Margo Weiss the reality was not only the year- book, but a year of new experiences; hours of instruction, tense moments before deadlines, and just plain fun . . .We give our thanks to Calhi. Mr. Stockton, and the 1978 Talon Staff for making it all possible. Head Honcho. Mr. Stockton. ' O HHk Calhi s Leading Newstaff Among the many changes at Calhi in 1978. some have been more subtle than others, One, was the transition made in Calhi ' s Leading Newspaper. The Calilornian. It had a new format and new heading style. It also came o its reading public in a neatly folded package making it more handy and readable. The pages themselves were constantly filled with excellent cartoons and fine journalistic talent. The Californian was a credit to the 1978 Newstaff; to its adviser. Mr. Donald Orr, and to its Editor-in- Chief Ron Golem, who called his experience in Newstaff a frus- tratingly delightful experience. 256 Newstaff v 1. News Co-Editor Scott McKnighi 2. I arr I ' ) « c ak.Nl. Ps HH , 0 i The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow road. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted, if I should ever come back, I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost L„ JO Mjju X , Ov-.- ' ' K. i HLaD - o yw H ' , vi A rvv . VJ W l9i% ' - r C? A ; -- y o V x - . J A O - ? X. : - r i
