M Mil III M K Looking hi The inevitable eye of a clock on the wall signals two minutes until the end of the period and Mr. Rawlinson quips, you know, the only trouble in this world is the clock.” With this, another Senior government or Current Affairs class ends. All the students rush out, but not many forget the lectures or discussion of the day in this man’s class. Frequently, his name is mentioned in the Small Quad and another discussion begins on the topics and ideas presented that day. Every student who has experienced a semester with Mr. Rawlinson feels truly privileged. To us he is a wonderful and groovy man. He relates to us; he understands our thoughts and ambitions; and we find ourselves striving to be up on his level of thinking. and Beyond His deep dedication to teaching and to his students more than qualifies Mr. Rawlinson for our award to him. We, on the 1969 Talon staff, feel very special in dedicating this book to Mr. Kenneth Rawlinson. Maybe this is because he is such a rare and special person. Thank you sir, from the Senior Class, and also from the younger students who will experience the magic of your teaching in future classes. n CHECK .ROOM 12 ■ ’ s A'7 r •- . ;V; •V Janet Marshall Vice-President Debby Johnson Secretary Seniors Look Beyond BACK ROW: Jim Kiger, Dave Day. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly-, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and agressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements however humble-, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs-, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is-, many persons strive for high ideals-, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love-, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nuture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars-, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. The greatness of Calhi this year did not lie in the individual accomplishments of a few, but in the fact that each did his part, no matter how small, to strive for the common goal of making Calhi an even better school. We the students developed not only a greater respect for the school, but a common respect and tolerance for one another's abilities and beliefs. Through this common respect we will ultimately develop a greater pride in ourselves and Calhi. I wish the best of luck to all of you in the coming years. The poloists were not only undefeated San Gabriel Valley League champs for the tenth year, but also advanced to the C.I.F. quarter finals. Fine team play enabled the Condors to post a 13-6 record against the best competition available. In addition to good teamwork, noteworthy and consistent individual efforts brought more honors to Calhi. Three players were recognized by all-C.I.F. selection: Ken Montgomery, first team; Bill Winkowski, second team; Bruce Chapin, third team. Some of the season highlights were: the third and fourth place finishes in the La Habra and Calhi tournaments, the first place tournament victory in the Pioneer tourney, the Compton game which was closer than the final score indicated, the exciting Bellflower game where 4th quarter missed free throws by Calhi proved to be the difference, the three-one-point losses in the final round to Lynwood, Santa Fe, and Norwalk which knocked Calhi out of 2nd place and a C. Playing inspired ball throughout the season were Linnemann and Lamphere who led the team in scoring, Rich Ballou and Jerry Perisho whose defense and rebounding were outstanding, and Jim Mercer who was equally adept on offense and defense. John Penfield, Chuck Gall, and Dan Morgan proved to be capable replacements in many tight spots.
