DEDICATIV N The students of California High School take great pleasure in dedicating the 1959 Yearbook to someone who has given unselfishly of his time, talents, and energies in helping CalHi to earn its fine reputation. Having been a teacher and coming in close contact with students has given him the knowledge, experience, and background for understanding young people and their prob- lems. Students who have worked closely with him say he has the wonderful quality of mak- . , y , K ' i . l V. llll is' Q r Q, b , M- :Xl if x X ,...,.,-5 ing people want to do a good iob. And yet it seems appropriate that a high school would take a great state's name and seek to copy its pattern of greatness. To be sure, the name California doesn't guarantee success, but the desire to maintain the reputa- tion of such a fine name is an understandable and worthy goal. In growth, in development, in creativity, and in performance, we have matched our states's pace, and it is with some pride that we review the 1958-59 school year with the accomplishments of a school appropriately named CaIifornia. ,G ' 3 ' , 4' I . gifs? When this happens a school has a tendency to let down and coast a little. It was extremely gratifying to find that this was not the case at Call-li. For this year, along with our student government and our outstanding athletic teams, CalHi really came to the front. I was happy also to see the increased participation in club activities on and around campus. l'd like to express my deepest thanks to the Administration, Faculty, Cabinet, Congress and Judicial, but most of all to you, the Student Body of 1959, for making my year as Student Body Presi- dent one I shall long remember. I feel the success of the Sophomore Class was due to the cooperation and consideration of its members. Four important factors which helped to make this success possible were Vice President Mike Chase, Secretary Sue Benner, the Sophomore Council, and our advisor, Mr. Cline. Part of the year's fun was in choosing our class rings, and in planning the Freshman-Sophomore Dance. I feel l gained a great deal from working with the class, and feel its potential is unlimited. Sincerely, Sophomore Class President ll A sys G u 'N x .XJ Mike Chase Vice President 1- I , W, C1 135 Sue Benner Secretary First Row: N. McGlone, C. Pierce, C. Boone, S, Mondon, N. Stair, J. Ci-If-XPIPS For more than titty Varsity football players, September 8, 1958 may have been the most important day dur- ing the school year. That day marked the opening of football practice. Colhi wasn't expected to have much of a team this year as the Blue and Gold was picked for the cellar in the San Gabriel Valley League race by most of the so-called experts. Any possible chance of Condor success lay in the hands of many players up from the Bee and Cee teams as the Condors had only seven returning' Varsity lettermen, Although a two touchdown underdog in its first two games, CalHi began fooling the-experts from the start as they played to a 7-7 tie with Newport Harbor and then completely plastered arch rival Whittier, 39-O, the next week. Perhaps a bit over confident after the Whittier win, the Condors scored in the first minute of play against El Monte and then were forced to come from behind in the last,6O seconds of the game to gain a l3-13 tie. The team hit its high spot after the El Monte game, as CalHi won its next five games and the league champion- ship in the process. After a I3-7 win over Glendale, the Condors captured vifiories over El Rancho by a 14-O taly, Bellflower 20-O, Excelsior I9-l3 and Santa Fe by a 26-13 score. These four wins combined with two losses suffered by all other league schools gave the loop crown to Cali-li the week before the end of the regular league play. y Looking ahead to meeting El Monte in the first round of the California. lnterscholastic Federation playoff, CalHi lost its first game of the year to Montebello bya score of2l-7. However, the Blue and Gold avenged the earlier tie with El Morite byiapending the Lions in the ClF first round, 7-O. The win moved the Condors into the quarter finals, farther previous iCalHi team had gone. The clock finally struck midnight for the CalHi Cinderella team as thefgiaridors were defeated by Colton in the quarter finals, 27-6. However, Cal ended the year with a 7V win, 2 and 2 tie record, the best in tlgfie school's history. ' ' 1' 'S 'S 1 I J' ' 'qi .Spain -- if t Say H Q . l X 0' f I sf! Graduation On the eve of graduation ceremonies each member of the Class of 59 recalls the past 4 years in a different way. Freshmen days were new and different with little knowledge of what the future would hold. As Sophomores and Juniors, they were care- free and gay, thinking only occasionally of the future. But their last year, as Seniors, has truly been the best. Now as they graduate, they see that the world is before them-that their high school days are over. May their future be filled with success and hap- piness.
