Many important decisions were made and the fourth high school started construction to be completed by September of 1955. High praise and recognition has come to the district from all over the country and of the practices in each of the schools and the district administration have been studied and used by other districts. Highest of all have been the splendid achievements of many of our students as verified by the many scholarships and awards given to them. On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the District, and the entire administrative staff, I congratulate all of you. Among them was the realization of the teamwork needed to produce a weekly newspaper. Trying to meet the deadline, typing furiously at the last minute to get the required copy to the printer, laying out the pages and then criticizing the finished edition were the outstanding features of the news staff. Theirs was the proud feeling of accomplishment on Fridays when the CALIFORNIAN was distributed to the student body. il' CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL WHITTIER, CALIFORNIA f Q V, an 54:63 -. 5-iq F l K I A 7 q et! oun , resi en orcio, oyYe, of renncln, ecretorg Q 1' I W Mrs. Dorothy Serofmo, Adwsor fi v .. if . v , an 4 F yr i . The varsity gave away a year in age, size and experience and, consider- ing these obstacles, made a very good showing. By winning their first-ever contest, this year's varsity set a precedent for future Condor teams. At the season's completion, Ray Aderrnann, Earle Drake, and Dave Ross were named to the SGVL second team. XUI LB Calhi 35 Whittier 50 ,xi Tl California fielded a Varsity basketball squad that was greatly improved over last season. The Condors took fifth place in the San Gabriel Valley League, a notch ahead of the El Rancho Dons. Mr. Alan Sawyer, the casaba coach, shifted personnel around giving team members, returning next year, many opportunities to play. In 21 contests the Condors triumphed eight times. This does not include the faculty game in which turncoat Sawyer helped down the Varsity, 45-39. Biil Brown, Larry Flores and Bob Beaver consistently were the outstand- ing players for the Condors with the former two winning all league berths. Brown was the squads top scorer with Flores close behind. Basketball became the first athletic contest that pitted a Calhi Varsity with nearby La Habra as the Highlanders succumbed twice to the Con- dors. ln the second meeting, which Calhi won, the Condors racked up their highest point total of their young- history, 80-37. Earlier, Bell Gardens had become the first team the Condors had put the double whammy on. Hard hit by illness late inthe season, the Varsity dropped a close 43-40 game to El Rancho after clobbering the Dons, 59-39, during the first round of play. Raw I: D. Burnett, T. Sciacca, J, Wilson, B. Hayes, CJ, Crowe, J, Tribble, D. Sargent. Row 2: F. James, H, Wray, N, Cherry, L. Miller, E, Jensen, R. Lucas, D, Racke, J Austin The scrappy middleweight squad was of championship caliber, but luck, fate or fortune, call it what you may, played an im- portant part in the outcome of many Bee games. No less than half a dozen games saw the Condors fall by four or less points. At the completion of the first semester, Mr. Stan Cramer took over the coaching duties from Mr. Art Hobson, who became principal. Dick Rieke, Tony Sciacca and Ernie Jensen possessed an explosive scoring punch with at least one rising to the occasion whenever needed. Jim Wilson, although scoring fewer points, was the other key man in the Calhi offense as playmaker. Calhi fielded their first Junior Varsity and Junior Bee squads with Mr. Hershell Guss as coach. The full seasoning given the boys on the iunior squads prepared many for the first-line teams next year besides giving twice as many boys a chance to participate. The Jaybees have the distinction of winning the lowest scoring a Condor quintet contested in when they battled to a T2-8 win over El Rancho in the first round, although held scoreless in the second and third quarters. During the season several standout JV performers were brought up for varsity games. Row l R. Patton, G, Kissel, D. Dickson, R. Eastin, R, Norberg, R. Bathgate. Row 2: S. Waldrip, D. Prechtl, Cv. Promise of a great 1956 track season is the result of this year's line showing. As it was, in- dividual spikemen gathered medals from all over Southern California including a large share from the San Gabriel League Finals at Mount San Antonio. The Varsity squad broke into the win column against Bell Gardens in the second league meet after a winless T954 campaign. Co-captains D:1ve Ross and Ray Adermann, along with Jack Holman, were the standouts on a team that included many good athletes. Ross' best event was the 440 and Adermann's the 880.
