my I IM f T CoM.MAiNDiNG OFFICER if To the finest crew in the world: I The events of the deployment recorded in this book reflect the dedication, ' professionalism, and perserverance of a crew that has become a fighting unit. The items recorded represent long hours of watch and work, and extended periods during which the CALIFORNIA was continuously at the ready. The accomplishments of this crew, during this cruise, will be long remembered as a source of pride to each of you. CALIFORNIA has met each commitment and has won the respect of not only our Nuclear Power Battle group Teammates but also those on the Mediterranean SIXTH Fleet and Indian Ocean SEVENTH fleet Navy team. We have had a good feeling about ourselves and CALIFORNIA, the compliments we have received support and justify that good feeling. It is there because of your individual contribution and involvement which was magnified through the efforts of your shipmates. The engineers are rightfully proud of the fact that in these nine months we've journeyed more than three times the distance around the world and have maintained the ship in a high state of readiness during one of the most demanding deployments in modern times. For the operators, the satisfaction of being selected by our senior commanders above others for the harder tasks will long be savored. Our weaponeers realize the readiness of CALIFORNIA to defend or attack has always been high because of their diligence in maintaining the complex weapons system. And our supply, medical, and administration departments can take great pride in knowing that the needs of CALIFORNIA shipmate were handled professionally with genuine concern. Though we have returned to our homes and families for a well deserved rest, when we look back with those who steamed with us, we'll do so with a sense of pride and accomplishment. For the spirit of a ship is in her men, the spirit of the CALIFORNIA comes from each of you. The many awards displayed on the Enlisted Dining Facility attest to this crewis sustained professionalism, a continuing record of superior performance. w.v,x,.,1 X. J. LCDR. NEIL M. BRENNAN - UNITED STATES NAVY Lcdr. Neil M. Brennan was born in Annapolis, Maryland, on November 18, 1944. He attended the United States Naval Academy and was graduated in 1966 with a degree in Naval Science and was commissioned Ensign, USN. After completing nuclear power training, LCDR. Brennan served aboard USS 'BAINBRIDGE IDLGN 252 from 1968 to 1970 as Auxiliaries Officer and later as Damage Control Assistant. After completing the Department Head Course at the Naval Destroyer School, he served on USS RICH IDD 8202 as Weapons Officer in 1971 and 1972. In August of 1972 he reported for duty at the Naval Academy as the Fourth Company Officer. He returned to sea duty in October off 1975 as Electrical Officer on USS LONG BEACH ICGN 91. LCDR. Brennan served on the Staff, Commander Naval Air Force, 'U.S. Pacific Fleet, from January 1978 to July 1979 as a member of the Nuclear Propulsion Mobile Training Team and as Maintenance Manager for USS ENTERPRISE ICVN 651. LCDR. Brennan reported aboard USS CALIFORNIA in ,November 1979, when he relieved CDR. Pollock as Executive Officer. He has been awarded the National Defense Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Battle Effiency Award, and Naval Expeditionary Medal. LCDR. Brennan is married to the former Jane Young from Thomasville, North Carolina. They have four children: Neil, Kara, Jason, and Stacey. COMMANDER JOHN C. POLLOCK, USN Commander Pollock was commissioned an Ensign in 1965 through the NROTC program at the University of Minnesota. He remained at the University of Minnesota Graduate School until 1967 obtaining a Master of Science degree in Mathematics immediately followed by one year of nuclear power training. He served in USS TRUXTUN ICGN-352 from 1968-1971, first as Damage Control Assistant, and then as Main Propulsion Assistant. From 1971-1974, he was assigned as Assistant Engineer Officer in the precommissioning unit of USS CALIFORNIA ICGN-362 during her construction at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. Following six months of Surface Warfare Officer Department Head School in Newport, RI, Commander Pollock returned to USS TRUXTUN ICGN-352 and served as Engineer Officer from June 1975 - May 1978. He then returned to USS CALIFORNIA ICGN-361 as Executive Officer in July 1978. He was transferred in December 1979 to Washington, DC to serve as Surface Nuclear Power Officer Placement Branch Head at Naval Military Personnel Command.
