my I IM f T CoM.MAiNDiNG OFFICER if To the finest crew in the world: I The events of the deployment recorded in this book reflect the dedication, ' professionalism, and perserverance of a crew that has become a fighting unit. The items recorded represent long hours of watch and work, and extended periods during which the CALIFORNIA was continuously at the ready. The accomplishments of this crew, during this cruise, will be long remembered as a source of pride to each of you. CALIFORNIA has met each commitment and has won the respect of not only our Nuclear Power Battle group Teammates but also those on the Mediterranean SIXTH Fleet and Indian Ocean SEVENTH fleet Navy team. We have had a good feeling about ourselves and CALIFORNIA, the compliments we have received support and justify that good feeling. It is there because of your individual contribution and involvement which was magnified through the efforts of your shipmates. The engineers are rightfully proud of the fact that in these nine months we've journeyed more than three times the distance around the world and have maintained the ship in a high state of readiness during one of the most demanding deployments in modern times. For the operators, the satisfaction of being selected by our senior commanders above others for the harder tasks will long be savored. Our weaponeers realize the readiness of CALIFORNIA to defend or attack has always been high because of their diligence in maintaining the complex weapons system. And our supply, medical, and administration departments can take great pride in knowing that the needs of CALIFORNIA shipmate were handled professionally with genuine concern. Though we have returned to our homes and families for a well deserved rest, when we look back with those who steamed with us, we'll do so with a sense of pride and accomplishment. For the spirit of a ship is in her men, the spirit of the CALIFORNIA comes from each of you. The many awards displayed on the Enlisted Dining Facility attest to this crewis sustained professionalism, a continuing record of superior performance. The winning team spirit has been the bond for the pyramiding effect, based on individual effort bound into work center productivity, which results in division achievements which boost the department's performance and establish new heights in total ships team effort I am proud of the record you have attained The outstanding reputation CALIFORNIA has long enjoyed has been enhanced because of your professional performance You the Worlds Finest Crew reaffirmed my belief and have convinced many others that CALIFORNIA is indeed the World s Finest Warhslp Well Done' C J SMITH Captain US Navy .
