The boys are taught that love of our country and respect for our flag are an integral part of the duty of all citizens. For many years P. A. 1 Boys State Staff - 1940 Legionnaires acted as Senior Counselors and Coordinators. Most of the junior Counselors were Law College students. In 1940 Boys State consisted of 20 cities and 5 counties. 'sf f I l I I I Ralph Van Courtright and the 1944 Boys State Band BCYS STATE CAMPS OUT IN TENTS ON FOGTBALL FIELD Named after Department Commander Bill Haughton, a city of tents was erected on the football field at Grant Union High School in l944. Reveille at 6:30 was followed by Flag Rais mg at 7 O0 Then 15 minutes of calisthenics led by Tiny Brockelman or Pop Brorsen. Then a mad rush to the rest rooms and the chow line. One incident of life in the tent city occurred when a violent storm struck the city one night and almost wrecked the place. Htuidreds of tiny frogs jumped arotmd the field next day and found their way into pillows, pajamas, and sleeping bags. jack Mauck of Hollywood takes oath of office after defeating Mike Minchin of Los Angeles for governor.
