an rrrr Q - it i- l A A-W-'wig FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER The completion of the 1966- 1967 cruise brings to a close the third tour of CALIENTE to the South China Sea in support of the United States effort in South- east Asia. As in the past, this cruise has been neither routine nor dull, we have worked long and hard providing logistic services to units of the mighty SEVENTH Fleet. We have transferred many millions of gallons of fuel, thousands of pounds of cargo, thousands of bags of mail, and hundreds of passenger personnel. The continued superb performance of the young men on CALIENTE and the dedicated supervision of the old timers have contributed to asuccessful nine-month cruise. It is this de- votion to the cause of freedom of the world that assures the strength of the United States. Few times in the history of the world have so few been called upon to accept so much responsibility. The responsibility of protecting the rights of all people to live as they wish to live. Before such a right is assured for all peoples of the world we will make many more tours to WESTPAC and continue to make many sacrifices in order to live peacefully the life we cherish. We will all recall the good things - the fun on liberty, the ship's parties at Grande Island, the sights we saw in Taiwan, the crossing of the equator, the beauty of Japan and the shopping in Hong Kong. We have seen a great many things and learned that much of the world does not enjoy the life that we do. Possibly, what we have seen and learned will place anew value on the life we have always taken for granted. Government of the people, for the people, and by the people may now have a different meaning and a clearer understanding for all of us. R. W. JACKSON Captain, U. S. Navy Commanding Officer K2 7--W i 'Q
